Defensive Blunders Haunt Adders

FT: Bedworth United 4    0 Atherstone

Tuesday, January 26, 2010

The first ten minutes saw end to end football as both sides tested each other with Keen, Atherstone and then Twigger, Bedworth having shots wide.

Atherstone continued from Saturday as they conceded a need less penalty. On 13 minutes, Bruce tripped Greenway as he was moving away from the goal. Stanley converted from the spot. A minute later Bedworth doubled their lead when Woakes lost possession by the by-line and Greenway shot home from the cross.

The next 15 minutes saw some even play with both sides having good half chances. The Adders were playing plenty of neat football and twice came close with efforts from Keen and Sheldon. On 40 minutes the Atherstone defence failed to clear and Gaunt was put through to chip the advancing Woakes.

Smith failed to control the ball when one on one with Kemp.

On fifty minutes Ramsay was played straight through the middle and shot past the advancing Woakes. The game could have descended into a landslide, but the Adders continued to battle even though the game was all but lost.

The play began to get scrappy as the Adders dominated possession.

The below par, overweight and very unfit Greenway, blasted well over from less than a yard out.

Atherstone brought on Banks, Rathbone and Robinson for Hendrie, Fulford and Sheldon and although they played better, it was not enough.

Bedworth brought on Browett, Linton and Orton for Stanley , Gaunt and Twigger, knowing they had all but won the game.

Two very poor refereeing decisions robbed the Adders of any respectability in the score line.

The first saw a blatant trip on Rathbone and then a last man foul by the Kemp on Smith, both went unpunished.

Again, like last Saturday, the Adders were frail defensively and did not have the killer punch up forward. Bedworth took the opportunities that were gifted to them and fully deserved their win.
