Adders Battle to Fine Win

FT: Atherstone 2    0 Sutton Coldfield Town

Saturday, January 30, 2010

Adders first home game since Boxing day came after a traumatic week which saw the departure of manager Daren Fulford.

After a scrappy start, Sutton began to dominate the early exchanges and shots by Ball and Owen were both well saved by Woakes. A good run Matt beating several defenders lead to a Sutton corner. In the 11th minute a neat Adders passing move lead to free kick on the edge of the area. The subsequent shot by Bruce was fired over the bar.

Although Sutton were dominating, the Adders were tackling aggressively. In the 20th minute a miss-hit shot by Sutton's Matt bobbled against the post and was cleared.

Nathan Woakes was by far the busier keeper and in the 37th minute, neat play by Jackson saw his shot well tipped over by Woakes.

The Sutton front men were linking up well and this lead to several more Sutton efforts which were well dealt with by the busy Woakes and the young Adders defence.

The first half ended with more defiant Adders defending as Sutton dominated.

The second half began with some fluent Adders passing but a breakaway by Matt lead to a Sutton corner. the subsequent corner saw a scramble in the Adders goalmouth and the ball saved by Woakes.

The game suddenly changed in the 48th minute when Sutton broke clear with two forwards advancing on Woakes , but the ball was shot weakly at the Adders keeper. Almost immediately, the Adders won a free kick inside the Sutton half which was taken by Robbie Banks. This was met by a fine diving header by Tom Guiney into the Sutton net.

With confidence in the team rising, Luke Keen hit a fine volley from a corner that was cleared off the Sutton line.

A breakaway by Sutton in the 70th minute saw a fine save again by Woakes. More fine Adders defending followed as a scramble developed after a Sutton corner.

The last ten minutes saw chances at both ends with Dodd and Bell missing good chances. The result was finally put beyond doubt in the 93rd minute with a fine breakaway goal by Luke Keen.

A superb Adders performance against leagues in form team, who despite dominating for long spells, could not break through the young Adders defence.
