Adders triumphant in defeat

FT: Atherstone 2    4 Arlesey Town

Saturday, February 27, 2010

Early pressure from a lively Arlesey side lead to the ball being scrambled off the Adders line. The first effort from the Adders was a shot by Keen which went narrowly wide. The pitch was standing up well after recent rain and twice Woakes had to be alert to Arlesey through balls.
Somewhat against the run of play Roscorla set off on a messy run before crossing to Smith who beat advancing keeper from 8 yards in the 16th minute. Adders lead short lived however, as 2 minutes later Arlesey’s Abbey passed the ball in the net after a scramble in the area.
Arlesey were now on top and Woakes had to make a fire save from Cavendish following a corner. Arlesey nearly increased their lead when Abbey headed in but he was adjudged offside.
Following a scuffle on the half way line Adder’s Bradley and Arlesey’s Abbey were both booked. A very harsh penalty decision was given against the Adders in the 35th minute when Abbey seemed to handle the ball first pushing the ball onto an Adders defenders hand. Leach scored with a shot into the roof of the net. Play was now becoming very tetchy and it was no surprise when Abbey scored their third goal in the 45th minute following hesitation in the Adders defence.

HT: Atherstone 1    3 Arlesey Town

The second half started badly for the Adders when Abbey added a fourth for Arlesey straight from the touch-off, though again a head ball seemed to be missed by the officials who were not having the best of days.
The substitutions of Dainty and Weale for the Adders added a bit more bite to the midfield but Arlesey nearly added a fifth when denied a fine Perry tackle. In the 73rd minute the pressure lead to a 1st senior goal by Weale who shot into the roof of the net for 12 yards.
Woakes made a fine double save in the 75th minute after a rare Arlesey break away. Adders continued to fight back with a succession of corners with Roscorla firing narrowly wide.
A succession of bizarre refereeing decisions by the increasingly myopic officials seemed to inspire the Adders and Luke Keen was very unlucky with a fire volley against the bar in the 89th minute.
Despite the score, a fine fight back by the young Adders side with an excellent second half performance by Dainty and Weale.
