Adders gain hard fought second consecutive double

FT: Atherstone 3    2 Soham Town Rangers

Tuesday, February 16, 2010

Soham nearly opened their account in the first minute after winning free kick from 30 yards out and their Andy Furnell latched on to the subsequent loose ball on the penalty spot but shot wide.

Two minutes later Adders laid their stall out and Bradley, playing down the right wing, crossed the ball to Smith who flicked on to the waiting Robinson who miss kicked from 10 yards.

Soon after, Dainty from the left, crossed to Smith who headed home from close range only to be ruled offside.

The game was not a one way affair, and Soham’s Gammon, beat the offside trap for a one on one with Woakes, but the latter was wise to the move and charged out to deal with the situation. Adders started to look dangerous every time they went forward and the breakthrough came on 15 minutes when Bradley fired a 35 yard cross to Smith who headed powerfully home across the face of goal.

After the kick off, Bradley continued to terrorise on the right and on 24 minutes delivered a similar cross to Todd Perry who headed home from close range in crowded box.

However, the celebrations were short lived as almost from kick off Soham caught Adders knapping and Turner carried the ball through midfield and was then allowed to shoot home from 10 yards giving Woakes little chance.

Just after the half hour Adders extended the lead when Hendrie's shot into the box found Smith waiting to pull the trigger but the latter was barged off the ball and the referee awarded a penalty. Keen stepped up and rifled his shot into the corner of the net.

The match was by no means one way traffic though and Soham kept Woakes busy without decisively threatening.

HT: Atherstone 3    1 Soham Town Rangers

The second half started with end to end football but the first real chance fell to Robinson who received a clever ball from Smith, however he shot just over. Two minutes later and Hendrie nearly put the game beyond doubt when a one on one with the keeper saw him chip over, but the goal bound effort was just cleared off the line by a Soham defender.

As the game progressed it opened up and although Adders had plenty of possession they could not penetrate effectively and Soham looked increasingly dangerous on the break. The visitors subsequently squandered a couple of golden chances the best of these being on about the 70 minute mark when Woakes had to make a double save.

Eventually Soham did get a goal back with five minutes left, when following an Adders corner their Napier caught the Adders on the break and fired low into the corner of the net.

This left a nervous last few minutes for the Adders to see out, which they did to claim yet another three points.

Simeon Smith was again awarded MOTM mainly for his first half performance.
