Players Wanted for Youth Teams

Atherstone Town are looking to operate a Youth team in both the Midland Floodlit Youth League and Leicestershire Floodlit Youth League for the coming season 2013/2014.

After returning to the Midland Floodlit Youth League in season 2012/13 with a team made up largely of first year and U16 players, the club has decided to swell it's youth ranks even more by entering a team in the Leicestershire Floodlit League for 2013/14.

Atherstone Town is a progressive club that likes to give its young players a chance to progress through the ranks at Sheepy Road, this season alone the have had three youth players make their competitive 1st team debuts and fifteen youth players play reserve team football, as well as the Youth Team reaching the Final Qualifying Round of the FA Youth Cup, narrowly missing out on a home tie with MK Dons.

If you would like to come along and trial for season 2013/2014, the trial will be held on Sunday 9th June(venue to be arranged).

Adders end season with a Win    May 5, 2013

Atherstone Town 2 Southam 1

Adders went ahead in the 11th minute. Hesitation at the back by Southam let in ONeil and he headed into an empty net from close range. Allan was foiled by Manuel in the 23rd minute, the Southam keeper diving low to his right to keep out the midfielders 25yd drive. Southams only effort on target was Rees low shot, saved with his feet by Leeson.

Half Time: 1-0

The Adders keeper repeated the save just after the break, this time keeping out a Smith shot with his feet. Adders were having most of the play by now and Yonwin was unlucky to see his shot deflected just wide in the 55th minute. The visitors though equalised ten minutes later. Full back Rees did well to get to the bye line and his cross eventually found Leaver who stroked the ball passed Leeson from 6yds. the Adders did end on a high though. With one minute left, ONeil fed Yonwin on the right of the area and his sweetly struck shot whistled passed Manuel and into the back of the net.

Adders close at Champions    May 5, 2013

Walsall Wood 1 Atherstone Town 0

Things began poorly for the Adders as they were forced to play the opening 20 minutes with 10 men until Charles arrived. Walsall were awarded a dubious penalty in the 5th minute but Leeson made a fine stop low to his right. Thereafter it was a gutsy display by the Adders, defending well but unable to create many chances on the break. Leeson was in fine form but he was unable to keep out the only goal in the 78th minute. He could not hold on to a fiercely hit shot and Stretton tapped in the winner.

After the match Walsall Wood were presented with the League Champions shield, fully deserved for their fine performances, especially over the last few weeks when they have been playing four matches a week.

Adders out in tense semi final    May 5, 2013

Atherstone Town 0 Brocton 1

With the tie all square after the first leg this looked to be a tough task for the Adders and so it proved in a tense first half with few goalmouth incidents. Fifes shot for the visitors in the 32nd minute, was well saved low to his left by Hazlett, was the first effort on goal. After two disappointing away performances, the Adders looked much livelier with Ashby in particular having a fine game in midfield. Sockets shot just over in the 43rd minute was their first effort on goal but Brocton should have taken the lead on the stroke of half time when Lomas headed over from close range.

Half Time: 0-0

The second period started with both sides stringing together some fine passing moves on the bobbly surface. Boal saw his flicked header from a Webb free-kick fly straight at keeper Whitehouse in the 49th minute. Adders came even closer six minutes later when Ashbys shot from an acute angle beat Whitehouse but somehow managed to hit the inside of the post and came out. Adders chances of playing in the final increased two minutes later when Bloor for the visitors was shown a second yellow card and hence a red for two cases of dissent in a minute. However as often happens the sending off seemed to spur on Brocton more and it was Hazlett, having his best game in an Adders shirt, who saved superbly from Berks in the 65th minute. The time should have been put to bed in the 73rd minute. Wilkes, though on goal, shot widely with only Whitehouse to beat. Brocton thought they had won it in the 80th minute but Berks 20yd drive flew narrowly passed Hazletts upright.

Full Time: 0-0

Extra Time

Webb saved the Adders with a fine defensive header in the 7th minute of extra time and Eggletons volley straight at Whitehouse was their only real effort on goal as they failed to capitalise on their man advantage. It was Hazlett again who saved them in the 15th minute, brilliantly arching backwards to keep out Berks deflected shot.

The tie was sealed in the 7th minute of the second period to the dismay of most of the large crowd. Latham was dispossessed by Hollinsworth in midfield and in seeking to alone brought down the nippy striker on the edge of the area. Ex Stafford Rangers striker Fife is probably the best free-kick specialist in the league and he made no mistake with a fine 20yd strike passed Hazlett and into the roof of the net.

Adders lose at Pelsall    Apr 26, 2013

Pelsall 2 Atherstone 1

Adders took the lead after 36 minutes. Pelsall keeper Hughes, under pressure from Webb dropped a high cross and Socket hooked the ball in from 10yds. The lead was short lived however as two minutes later Ellis volleyed home a free kick from near the penalty spot. Eggleton and Webb both tested Hughes with long shots early in the second half but it was the home side that scored the winning goal after 59 minutes when Ellis again headed home a free kick from close range.

former adders manager sadly dies    Apr 24, 2013

Former Republic of Ireland midfielder Tony Grealish, who captained Brighton & Hove Albion in the 1983 FA Cup final, has died at the age of 56.

Grealish, who won 45 international caps between 1976 and 1986, had been battling against cancer.

The Londoner made over 170 appearances for his first club Leyton Orient before moving to Luton Town in 1979.

He signed for Brighton in 1981 and led them out at Wembley to face Manchester United in the final two years later.

It remains Brighton's only appearance in the cup final and the team, under manager Jimmy Melia, drew the first match 2-2 before Ron Atkinson's United won the replay 4-0.

Grealish went on to play for West Bromwich Albion, Manchester City, Rotherham United and Walsall before finishing his playing career at Bromsgrove Rovers in 1993. and was manger at atherstone town
in 2002 /03

He scored eight goals for Ireland during his decade playing for the national side.

Grealish was given his first Republic cap by then player-manager Johnny Giles but made his greatest impact in the green jersey during the reign of Eoin Hand.

A hard-working midfielder, Grealish played alongside the likes of Liam Brady and Frank Stapleton in the Republic side which narrowly missed out on qualification for the 1982 World Cup finals.

They earned home wins over beaten 1978 World Cup finalists Holland and France during the 1982 qualifying campaign but a controversial defeat in Belgium left Hand's side missing out on a place in Spain on goal difference.

Adders Draw    Apr 21, 2013

Castle Vale 1 Atherstone 1

Smallwood for the home side shot straight at Adders keeper Leeson after 13 minutes in the games first worthwhile effort on goal but thereafter it was the Adders who dominated. A Webb header after 25 minutes was tipped over the crossbar by Farley and from the subsequent corner Wilkes volley flew straight at the keeper. Boggild scuffed his shot with just the keeper to beat soon after and then a 30yd Wilkes free kick flew straight at Farley. The Adders had dominated the first half but went into the break 1-0 down. An Obi header was tipped onto the bar by Leeson but the young keeper was unable to keep the ball spinning back over the line.

Half Time: 1-0

The Adders started the second half with much more purpose and Boggild and Yonwin both went close early on but things could have turned worse after 55 minutes. Leeson miss hit his goal kick straight to a Vale forward, the ball found its way to Smallwood in front of an open goal but he somehow dragged his shot wide. Soon after Ashby crossed to Webb but he fired just over and then a Boggild miss hit shot was nearly turned in by Yonwin. The equaliser finally came in the 68th minute. Yonwin and Ashby combined well on the left before Ashby crossed and Allans low shot from 10yds bobbled over Farleys right arm before hitting the back of the net. Sockets corner led to a scramble in the 6yd box before the ball was hacked away. That was the last real action of a match that never reached any great heights on a firm uneven pitch.

Adders Draw in Semi    Apr 16, 2013

Brocton 2 Atherstone 2

Adders twice came from behind to force a draw in an exciting first leg of the League Cup semi-final. As in the league fixture back in August it was the home team who started the best and it was Fife who headed home after only 6 minutes. Eggleton equalised in the 23rd minute when following a strong run down the left wing he cut inside and fired a low shot in off the near post. Berks volleyed Brocton in front after 55 minutes but the Adders made it 2-2 with the best move of the match in the 67th minute. Some superb passing led to ball being fed to Webb who finished with a neat chip over Whitehouse from 8yds.

Adders Back to Winning Ways    Apr 15, 2013

Atherstone Town 3 Pershore 0

The match started as it was to continue with the Adders on the offensive. In their first attack a Socket shot was fumbled round the post by Oliver. From the corner it was Socket again with a beautifully flighted corner which Boggild headed in at the far post. Soon after, chaotic defending in the away defence led to another corner being scrambled off the line. Gradually Pershore were coming into the match but despite a fair amount of possession the Adders defence was relatively untroubled. Eggleton must be the most improved full-back in the league and his powerful run down the right deserved better when his shot hit the inside of the post with Oliver well beaten. Adders second goal came just before the interval. Yet another superb Socket free kick from wide on the right cleared everyone before nestling in the back of the net.

Half Time: 2-0

Pershore dominated possession at the start of the second half but Hazlett still had little work to do. Bailey did well for the Adders in the 63rd minute, seizing onto a loose ball but his volley sailed over the bar. The last twenty minutes saw the home side in total control. Yonwin should have scored with a near post header after 70 minutes and then two minutes later Eggleton drove a spectacular volley straight at team mate Boal denying the full back a possible goal of the season contender. A third goal had to come and it was Webb who supplied it with a sublime lob from 25yds over Oliver. He nearly repeated it soon after but this time the Pershore keeper managed to tip the ball over the bar. Boal was denied a deserved goal on his return in the 82nd and 89th minutes with two headers against the foot of the post. Between which Pershore finally had a shot on target when Murphy shot straight at Hazlett from the edge of the area.

Adders Lose at Southam    Apr 7, 2013

Southam 4 Atherstone Town 0

Adders were quick off the mark and Wilkes cross cum shot nearly found the net after only two minutes. Yonwin then shot straight at keeper Manuel before the same player, after intercepting a loose back pass saw his effort narrowly clear the bar. It was the home side though who grabbed the first goal after 25 minutes. A long clearance seemed destined for Hazlett but the Adders keeper was beaten to the ball by Graham who had the simple task of tapping into the vacant net. Things became worse for Adders is the 28th minute. The assistant called over referee Southgate following a throw-in and after a long discussion produced a red card for Charles. The assistant apparently heard dissent from the Adders defender but with several different versions of the incident circulating after the match it was hard to know what to believe.

Half Time: 1-0

With a player down it was no surprise to see Southam boss the second period. The second goal came in the 61st minute when Graham turned in a low corner at the near post. Hazlett was forced into several fine saves before Briscoe volleyed in the third after 78 minutes and then Murphy completed the scoring in the 80th minute in a match forgotten as quickly as possible.

Adders Win Again    Apr 2, 2013

Atherstone Town 4 Lichfield City 2

An Evans free kick into the area after only 2 minutes found Geffin unmarked and the Lichfield centre half sent a firm header passed Hazlett in the home goal. Wilkes warmed the palms of Johnson with a vicious 30yd free kick after 10 minutes as the Adders regained their composure and they scored a deserved equaliser after 26 minutes when Boggild headed in at the near post. It was 2-1 after 39 minutes. A long through ball deceived the away teams central defenders and Wilkes gleefully accepted the chance volleying the ball passed Johnson from close range. Adders were now in control and Boggild and Yonwin could easily have added a third in first half injury time.

Half Time: 2-1

Adders again started slowly after the break and were lucky when a poor Charles back pass went straight to Holt but Hazlett came to the rescue with a brave save. In the 60th minute Wilkes seized on to a poor defensive header but his shot from 12yds grazed the upright. Adders pressure finally told in the 70th minute when Adders ace marksman Wilkes made no mistake with a header at the far post following a free kick, to make it 3-1. The three points were made safe after 79 minutes. A Bailey cross into the six yard box was slotted home by Boggild. Lichfield gained some consolation in the 85th minute when former Adders Milner headed in at the far post.

Adders Edge Out 9 Man Brocton    Mar 10, 2013

Atherstone Town 3 Brocton 1

A loose ball out of the Brocton defence in the 5th minute gave Wilkes an early chance and he made it 1-0 with a low shot from 20yds passed Whitehouses right hand. Both Bell and Berks for the visitors both forced Hazlett to fine saves as the game zipped along at a break neck pace. More poor defending nearly let in Wilkes again and then in the 13th minute a defence splitting pass by Latham set up Webb but his shot was just off target. It was 2-0 to the Adders after 40 minutes. Eggleton headed a far post corner back across the 6yd box and Socket was on hand to blast the ball over the line. Brocton reduced the deficit on the stroke of half time with a fine 20yd volley by Berks.

Half Time: 2-1

Brocton forced an early corner but after a quick throw out by Hazlett, Webb was put through on goal and he slotted the ball easily passed Whitehouse to make it 3-1. Sockets fine 40yd run deserved a better finish after 55 minutes and then Pickering for the visitors should have done better with a header. However there was then controversy when in the 65 minute Brocton appeared to have reduced the deficit. Certainly there was a Brocton player in an offside position just before the ball goal was scored but he appeared to receive it from an Adders defender. Brocton at this point totally lost the plot and Fife was sent off. For once a poor referees decision went in favour for the Adders but in fact it seemed to inspire Brocton more. They reduced the deficit in the 86th minute when Evans was left with a simple tap in. Stevenson then received a red card following an incident near the corner, reducing the visitors to nine men. Brocton threw everything at the home defence in the final few minutes but the Adders clung on to the lead to move up to third in the table.

Adders Grind Out Win    Mar 3, 2013

Nuneaton Griff 1 Atherstone Town 2

Much of the opening period was spent in the Adders half but with the defence in resilient mood Griff were restricted to long range shots. In the 7th minute a breakaway saw Webb with just keeper Watson to beat but his shot just cleared the bar. Gradually the Adders came more into the game and in the 28th minute a Socket corner found Eggleton but his header was well saved and on the follow up Allans shot smashed against the cross bar. Ashby forced Watson to a fine save soon after and it was no surprise when the Adders took the lead in the 36th minute. Another teasing Socket corner landed in the Griff 6yd box and Latham was first to react, smashing the ball home from close range. Griffs only worthwhile effort came just before the break with a long range free kick straight at Adders debut keeper, Hazlett.

Half Time: 0-1

Griff equalised after 51 minutes when a long through ball evaded the away defence and Mark G Williams slotted the ball home under the advancing Hazlett. Much of the second half was spent in a midfield battle on a bobbly pitch that made flowing football very difficult. Webb could easily have scored when volleying straight at Watson from close range. Griffs best chance was a Brenon drive just over in the 80th minute. Adders grabbed the winning goal in the 88th minute. Substitute Yonwin had just replaced Allan when a Socket cross landed at his feet on the edge of the area. He turned and sent a low shot passed Watson and into the corner of the net to send Adders fans in the good-sized crowd into ecstasy.

Pershore 3 Atherstone 1

The home team scored with their first attack in the 4th minute when Marsh cut it from the left wing and drilled a low shot passed Dolmans left hand from the edge of the area. Wilkes and Allan both had chances to equalise before the latter put the Adders level after 23 minutes. A Latham cross was headed back across the area by Wilkes and Allan applied the finishing touch with a neat glancing header. Pershore regained the lead after 32 minutes when a cross to the near post was headed in by Marsh. The same player completed his hat trick six minutes later. Cutting in from the right wing he evaded two Adders tackles before hammering the ball low passed Dolman. An Eggleton header straight at home keeper Davis was the best the Adders side could manage.

Half Time: 3-1

The second half was a poor quality affair and in truth the Adders rarely looked like causing a confident Pershore side many problems. Boggild hit a ferocious volley just wide after 50 minutes whilst Webb after a superb run through the heart of the home defence saw his effort scrambled off the line. Pershore could have increased their lead in the 70th minute when a Finnigan shot was deflected passed Dolman but the Adders keeper did well to pounce on the ball before it crossed the line.

Adders Lose to Ref    Feb 17, 2013

Atherstone Town 0 Littleton 1

Littleton have probably been the best footballing side the Adders have met on their travels this season so this was always going to be a tough encounter and things got even tougher after just two minutes. A left wing corner to the far post was not gathered by ONeil and the ball fell invitingly to defender Beattie 8yds out who sidefooted the ball into the vacant net. Eggleton was unlucky two minutes later when his header was kicked off the line by Mitchell and Boggild was even more unlucky after 8 minutes when his header beat Dell only to rebound off the cross bar. The rest of the half continued in a similar vein with constant Adders pressure but with the Littleton back line in resilient mood. Ashby shot straight at the keeper from a Webb cross in the 20th minute and the same player screwed his shot wide from 12yds in the 35th minute. Ex Evesham defender Fitter for the visitors nearly grabbed a second with a superb shot from fully 45yds only to see it bounce back off ONeils cross bar.

Half Time: 0-1

The action in the second period did not really get underway until the 68th minute. Webbs fine run down the right wing led to his shot being well saved at his near post by Dell. From the ensuing corner Eggletons header struck the cross bar and then Latham directed his header straight at Dell as the Adders turned the screw. After being under constant pressure, Littleton nearly made it two in the 72nd minute. A long ball out of defence found Slavin through on goal but ONeil dived athletically to his right to save. It seemed only a matter of time before the Adders grabbed the equaliser. Time after time the ball flew across the area only to be met with a defenders boot in a frantic finish to the match. The nearest the Adders came was in the 90th minute when a right wing cross struck the bar and then an Adders forward was clearly pulled back by the shirt in the area but referee Lane who did not have the best of afternoons somehow managed to miss it.

Adders Work Hard for Win    Feb 10, 2013

RC Warwick 2 Atherstone Town 3

Adders dominated the early play with Webb proving especially dangerous on the wing and it was he who tapped in from close range after 10 minutes only to see the assistants flag raised. The first goal came after 15 minutes. A long through ball found ONeil and the former Boldmere striker finished coolly with a chip over the advancing Tobin. In the 27th minute another expert Webb cross found Allan alone at the far post but his header was well smothered by Tobin. By this stage play was much more even though chances were few as the gluepot conditions kept play mostly in midfield.

Half Time: 0-1

Although at the bottom of the table Warwick came out fighting at the start of the second half though the returning ONeil in the Adders goal was relatively untroubled. Adders could have added a second in the 60th minute when a low Wilkes cross flashed across the 6yd box just in front of Allan. It was no surprise though when the home side grabbed the equaliser after 65 minutes. Referee Cutts adjudged Eggleton to have handed the ball in the area though quite how the Adders defender could have avoided the ball only the referee would know. Wilson scored easily from the spot. The Adders finally upped the tempo and minutes later Allan blasted over from 6yds. They regained the lead in the 75th minute when after some neat inter passing on the left wing, Socket delivered a cross to the near post where Boggild soared highest to score with a superb glancing header into the far corner of the net. It was 1-3 in the 87th minute when the two substitutes Gayle and Yonwin combined well and the latter scored with a header over the advancing Tobin from 12yds. A long through ball caught out the Adders defence two minutes later for Davies to run on to and score but there were no more alarms and they saw out injury time comfortably to move to third in the Premier Division.

Adders Power into Semi Finals    Feb 8, 2013

Lichfield 2 Atherstone 4

A couple of early scrambles in the Lichfield 6yd box early on were rare moments of excitement in a first half quickly forgotten. Adders players looked rusty after three weeks inactivity whereas the home side looked a far more imposing outfit than earlier in the season. Play was interrupted on numerous occasions for minor off the ball incidents which disrupted the Adders normal slick passing style. The only goal came in the 27th minute. A long ball into the area fell for Thurstance who side-footed in from 6yds.

Half Time: 1-0

Adders came out of the stalls with much more purpose in the second period, and equalised after 49 minutes. Ashby and Yonwin both had clear chances to shoot but eventually the latters cross found Latham who chested the ball over the line. Six minutes later it was 2-1 to the Adders. A quick free kick found Yonwin on the right wing. His cross fell to Boggild who he bundled the ball passed Johnson in the home goal and into the back of the net. The tie looked secure after 70 minutes when substitute Webb left his marker for dead and crossed from the bye line to Wilkes near the penalty spot. The Adders ace marksman made no mistake with a fierce low right foot shot. Lichfield were back in the tie though in the 73rd minute with the best goal of the match, a 25yd curler by Holt that gave Dolman no chance. Lichfield pressed for the equaliser but superb defending by the Adders back four kept the home attack at bay. As Lichfield threw defenders forward the Adders were always likely to add a fourth on the break. After Ashby had hit the post following a fine Wilkes run Webb finally made the tie safe, tapping the ball into an empty net after a break by Ashby.

Bromsgrove Sporting 2 Atherstone Town 2

Adders were soon under pressure from the league leaders. Turks shot in the 8th minute was well saved low to his left by Dolman and soon afterwards after a scramble in the Adders 6yds box the ball struck a Bromsgrove player on the line before being hacked away. ONeill nearly opened the scoring for the Adders in the 12th minute on their first attack but after a neat turn and volley the ball sailed just past the upright. Adders defender Sadler was stretched off in the 23rd minute to be replaced by Boggild but by now they were more than holding their own in an entertaining encounter and nearly took the lead in the 30th minute when ONeills low shot just passed the wrong side of the post. However it was Bromsgrove who took the lead three minutes later. A left wing cross slipped from Dolmans grasp and Morrison tapped home from close range. Adders were back on even terms in the 40th minute when substitute Boggild was tripped from behind and Wilkes fired home confidently from the penalty shot. It was nearly two for the Adders right on half time. ONeills cross to the far post was headed inches wide by Wilkes.

Half Time: 1-1

The home side made it 2-1 after 51 minutes with a fine shot by Nicol from the edge of the area which gave Dolman no chance. Boggilds 25yd volley flew straight at Savage soon after as the Adders fought back well and then Yonwin was denied by a fine save after another accurate pass by ONeill. This was developing into a fine advertisement for the league as play switched from one end to the other and it was the Adders who got a deserved equaliser in the 78th minute. They were awarded a free kick 25yds out and Socket curled a superb free kick around the wall and high into the net. Both sides could have won it in injury time. A Bromsgrove header struck the cross bar and then Wilkes fired wide with just Savage to beat.

A tremendous show by the Adders in a match where the standard of football was way above Combination level. Special mention must be made of the Adders midfield who ran themselves into the ground on a gooey pitch.

Adders Dominate in Win    Jan 7, 2013

Atherstone Town 3 Pelsall Villa 1

Ellis had a clear chance for the visitors straight from the kick off but shot straight at Dolman from 10yds. Adders took the lead after only 3 minutes. After a mazy run down the left by Sadler, he fed OfNeill on the edge of the area and the former Boldmere man made no mistake with a low shot just inside the post. In the 12th minute Adders were two up. A trademark Socket thunderbolt from 25yds shook the Pelsall cross-bar and Yonwin was on hand to tap in the second. OfNeill should have made it three soon after when he seized on to a loose back pass but his weak effort sailed over the bar. Pelsall were back in the match though after 23 minutes, Griffiths firing in through a ruck of players from the edge of the area. Both teams had good chances towards the end of the first half. Socketfs fine left-footed strike was tipped around the post by Hughes in the 30th minute and then Dolman was forced into making a superb reaction save from Ellis after a Cooke free kick had struck the upright.

Half Time: 2-1

OfNeillfs fine run and shot just wide was the first meaningful effort of the second period after 60 minutes as the Adders started to dominate play. Six minutes later Eggletonfs cross from the bye line should have been converted by Yonwin and then from the ensuring corner Wilksf header thumped the Pelsall cross bar. Finally after 72 minutes the Adders gained reward for their domination. Substitute Webb seized onto a defence splitting pass by Socket to coolly fire low passed Hughes from the edge of the area. Pelsallfs only effort on goal was a Battison free kick well held by Dolman. The last ten minutes were totally dominated by the Adders. Boggild should have scored after 88 minutes but blasted over from close range as the Adders eventually coasted to a well deserved win to go level on points with Walsall Wood and Littleton at the top of the table.

Adders take the sting out of the Bees    Dec 31, 2012

Adders Backroom Banter!
Game 29/12/12
Studley FC v Atherstone Town FC at The Beehive Abbeyfields Drive

Adders take the sting out of the Bees

The Adders travelled down the M42 to Redditch to take on Midland Alliance outfit Studley FC on their 3G pitch during the festive period due to lack of games over the last few weeks and it turned out to be a real Christmas Cracker!
The Adders defence were not in any mood to be handing out any presents and defended resolutely with Charles and Latham standing firm against talented Studley striker Danny Lennon and Sockett and Eggleton with some fine interplay with the Adders wingers going forward.
It was an evenly matched first half with the Strong Physical Studley side creating a few chances with triallist keeper Ian Kimberly not looking troubled by Studleys attack and showing a safe pair of hands when they did eventually get the shots off on the Adders goal.
The Adders midfield were distributing the ball well into space for Saddler and Ashby to take the attack to Studley and both wingers were delivering great balls across the box, although the forwards had bought their shiny new boots rather than their shooting boots! To be fair Wilks was getting a lot of ball into feet which and playing balls into the oncoming midfield to run at the Studley defence, Laurence ONeil who signed for the club some months back finally got his opportunity to play, and created havoc in the Studley backline with his jinking runs. Adders were without influential striker Yonwin due to work commitments, as he was still working as an Elf in the Adders souvenir shop!
Half time came and the Turkey sandwiches and Glhwein were distributed to the fans watching the game by the 3 spare goal keepers the Adders had taken with them whilst Barnsey the goal keeper coach was busy booking his holiday to Thailand and then a bit of weeding as his garden has overgrown somewhat due to all the rain recently!
The Second half kicked off in near darkness as Studley pressed the Adders from the off having a lot of possession in the middle of the park and appearing to have a lot of space and time on the ball to deliver wave after wave of dangerous balls down into the channels for the Studley wingers and forwards to run at the back four. Liam O Shea of Studley being a particular threat timing his runs to perfection in behind the adders back four
The pressure paid off for Studley as a deep corner was headed back across the Adders box to Studley midfielder Daniel Wolfe who was waiting to strike, he struck the ball to perfection from 20 yards, the ball looped over the diving keeper into the top far corner of the net- a fine goal well taken.
The Adders subs came on, and immediately sparked life into the game OPPO, Boggild, Joe Hart lookalike Dolman and Webb fresh legs seemed to do the trick as the final 25 minutes belonged to the Adders who created 3 or 4 great chances to salvage the game, eventually the equaliser arrived Wilks picked up the ball on the left hand side of the Studley box turned and fired a ball over the Studley defence where Eggleton was drifting in at the back post to volley the equaliser from six yards 1-1 and deservedly so!
The Adders kept the pressure on and Boggild was put through by the busy Wilkes and the Studley keeper reacted quickly and was out to smoother the ball just as Boggild was letting fly with his shot, a great save kept Studley in the game, five minutes later a cross from Webb found Boggild again unmarked who drilled a right footed volley across the goal and just over the far side of the cross bar.
Thats how the game finished, so a good work out for the Adders to blow the cobwebs away and prepare for the next couple of tough games versus Walsall Wood and Bromsgrove Sporting firstt and second respectively in the league, the Adders management team hoping for a good following from the supporters to support the lads at these games.

Adders Win Local Derby    Dec 16, 2012

Atherstone Town 1 Nuneaton Griff 0

A keenly contested first half to say the least. With a heavy though playable pitch both midfields battled it out for supremacy and this lead to a serious of bone-crunching challengers. Referee Walkersf yellow card was much in evidence early on but towards the end of the half some decent football did break out. Slinn for the visitors should have done better in the 40th minute when through on goal but he blasted the ball way over the bar and then Latham for the Adders saw his 20yd volley dip just too late to trouble Watson in the visitors goal.

Half Time: 0-0

Things started much more brightly in the second half and Wilkesf close range volley was tipped round the post by the agile Watson. Then came the crucial few minutes of the match. Slinn was brought down in the area in the 58th minute but Millerchip thumped the Adders cross bar with the resultant penalty kick. The ball was hoisted downfield and Wilkes saw his shot scrambled off the line. From the resultant corner in the 59th minute Eggleton rose highest to head passed Watson though Griff protested vehemently that the ball was not over the line when it was hooked away. If anything the midfield battle became even more intense and it was no surprise when a Griff player became the one to see a red card. As the visitors strove for an equaliser finally some space appeared on the pitch. Webb tried for a spectacular overhead kick in the 88th minute but crucially missed the ball and then Wilkesf drive flashed narrowly wide as the Adders hung on for a fine victory which takes them to third in the table.

Adders Show Class    Dec 7, 2012

Atherstone Town 6 Coventry Copsewood 2

With the Adders squad ravaged by injury and suspensions it was an unfamiliar line up that faced Copsewood and in the first half it looked like they had never played together before which they hadnt. The first half hour was dominated by the visitors. In the 7th minute a Wimbush cross was sidefooted home from 6yds by Gordon. Then on the half hour Wimbush let fly with a speculative 30yd shot which deceived Dolman in the home goal and flew high into the net. Towards the end of the half though Copsewood were being forced back more and more and Wilkes grabbed a goal back when Furlong in the Copsewood goal failed to hold a cross and the Adders striker drove the ball in the net from 8yds.

Half Time: 1-2

As in the last two matches the Adders dominated the second half with some superb passing and finishing on a sticky pitch. Yonwin started things moving after 48 minutes when he seized onto a through ball and blasted it passed the keeper to make it 2-2. Then Wilkes scored the goal of the game, striking a superb 25yd volley passed Furlong to put the Adders into the lead. Bailey was unlucky with a cross cum shot which hit the inside of the post and then in a rare Copsewood breakaway the ball finished up in the Adders net but the linesmans flag was raised. Adders gained a deserved victory with three goals in the 65th, 66th and 67th minutes. Firstly Copsewood captain Hunt slid the ball into his own net from a Bailey cross, then Wilkes hit another 25yd screamer passed Furlong and finally the sixth goal was added by Yonwin who turned and shot high passed Furlong from 10yds. It could have been seven just before the end but the superb Eggleton saw his volley sail just over.

Adders Great Win in Storm    Nov 25, 2012

Bloxwich United 0 Atherstone Town 5

Rarely can a match have been played in such appalling conditions. The hardy bunch of Adders diehards, huddled together in what shelter there was, formed the majority of the crowd whereas elsewhere only about ten spectators ventured out of the warm bar. Those present though saw the Adders team complete their best win of the season.

After Wilkes and Yonwin had both seen early chances well saved by Hendy the Adders took the lead after 25 minutes. A long free kick was headed on by Wilkes and Yonwin easily beat the keeper with a low shot from 10yds. Two minutes later Wilkes was left unmarked 20yds out and he beat Hendy with a shot passed the keepers right hand. It should have been three just before half time. Webb played a neat one-two off the corner flag before crossing. Yonwins shot from 10yds was brilliantly saved low to his right by Hendy.

Half Time: 0-2

The second half was dominated by the Adders who passed the ball around impressively on the pitch which despite the rain was a credit to the Bloxwich groundsman. The home team were down to ten men after 62 minutes when Baker was dismissed for a wild tackle and from the ensuing free kick Wilkes volley was superbly tipped around the post by Hendy. It was 0-3 to the Adders five minutes later when Socket fired in a 30yd thunderbolt. Sadler made it 0-4 in the 75th minute when cutting in from the left wing and firing the ball low passed the keeper from the edge of the area. The scoring was completed after 80 minutes with a penalty. Ashby was fouled in the area, though it seemed a harsh decision, and Wilkes fired the ball high into the Bloxwich net to make it 0-5. The few remaining spectators then sought shelter in the bar as the wind and rain got worse and referee Stonier thankfully called a halt to proceedings with only a token amount of injury time.

Racing Club Warwick Res 5-3 Adders Res    Nov 20, 2012

The Adders kept the ball well in the opening 5 minutes & created two good chances with Luke Tyler drilling the ball across the 6 yard box on both occasions but there was no-one there to put it in the net. After some good possession by the adders it was Warwick who took the lead with their first attack, they worked the ball well down the right & then finished well from the edge of the box into the bottom corner. It was soon 2-0 when Rob Hammond gave the ball on the edge of his own box & got punished by the forward with him finding the net. Adders then went even further behind when Warwick scored a headed goal from a corner. H/T 3-0. The Adders came out second half & looked like a different team, playing some tidy football on a very heavy pitch & pegged Warwick back for most of the half. They pulled a goal back through Dan Creaney with an excellent volley from outside the area but Warwick went straight down the other end & made it 4-1. The Adders then piled a lot of pressure on Warwick & pulled another goal back when Lloyd Storey finished well from the edge of the area. Storey then picked up a second yellow card when adjudged to have fouled a Warwick defender. The decision was very harsh as it seemed Storey clearly got the ball & not the man, but his earlier caution was due to a very silly challenge. Although down to 10 men the Adders continued to attack the Warwick defence a created several chances. Liam Potter had the ball in the net but the flag was up for offside. Warwick then caught Atherstone on the break & made it 5-2 with a deflected effort off Hammond which wrong footed Tom Leeson in the Adders goal. The Adders fought to the end to get back into it & got their third from the penalty spot when George Brindley was tripped in the box. Luke Tyler stepped up to slot into the bottom corner. F/T 5-3. A good effort from Atherstone in the second half to try & save the game but it was too little too late after a sloppy first half performance.

Adders Outplay Copsewood    Nov 18, 2012

Coventry Copsewood 1 Atherstone Town 1

Both Yonwin for the Adders and Fowler for Copeswood had headers just wide early on but it was Wilkes long range volley in the 8th minute that came closest to a goal. The first half was one of Copeswood pressure but with the Adders having good chances on the break. Ashby had a volley blocked on the line after 22 minutes and Yonwin saw his header fly just over in the 32nd minute. The same player now seemingly recovered from a recent injury saw his 33rd minute low shot shave the post as the visitors began to gain the upper hand.

Half Time: 0-0

The second half was one of incessant Adders pressure as the team put together some of their best play of the season. However the all important goal just would not come. Yonwin in particular was unlucky. In the 49th minute his quick turn and shot from 10yds was met with a fine reaction save from Furlong and in the 52nd minute his free kick from 25yds was tipped around the post. It was Yonwin again a minute later, his header bringing a fine save by Furlong. A fine run and cross by Webb in the 54th minute saw his cross fall at Wilkes feet but the tall striker blasted the ball over the bar. Soon after Webb, left with just the keeper to beat somehow managed to screw his shot wide and then Wilkes headed straight at Furlong when it seemed easier to score. Finally Adders had the ball in the net after 63 minutes. A free kick was headed firmly into the net by Yonwin. As the Adders fans and players celebrated and the referee ran back to the centre circle he saw the linesman with his flag up. Without any consultation he waved play on. With most Adders players out of position the ball was kicked long up to Spence who beat Adders new keeper Jay with a firm shot. Yonwin was not offside as he clearly ran through several defenders before heading the ball. If another player was offside surely he was not interfering with play. Why not consult with the assistant? All in all a shocking decision. However with 7 minutes remaining the Adders finally scored. A superb through ball by Yonwin found Ashby and he coolly slotted the ball under the advancing Furlong. Both sides could have won the match in injury time. Spence, looking yards offside, was denied by a fine Jay save and then Ashby saw his shot cleared off the line with almost the last kick of the game.

Great entertainment by the players, not such good work by the officials.

Adders Through in Cup    Nov 4, 2012

Atherstone Town 4 Greenhill 0

The Adders side looked a strong one against Division One side Greenhill from Dudley and the home side dominated the opening half. There was some fortune attached to the first goal in the 19th minute. The referee appeared to award a throw in to Greenhill on the half way line. However when an Adders player took the throw in play continued and with the visitors defence out of position Matty Brown was brought down inside the area. Wilkes converted the penalty low to Whitehouses right. Latham and Brown both could have scored in the 26th and 28th minute before Yonwin forced the keeper to a fine save high to his left to keep out a crisply hit volley. Greenhills only real chance was a Cooper header well saved by Allen just before the break.

Half Time: 1-0

Greenhill nearly scored right at the start of the second half and Allen had to show great agility to tip over a Woodridge header. That was as good as it got for the visitors as the Adders gradually turned the screw and play became stuck in the Greenhill half. Wilkes scored a second with a superb diving header from a Yonwin cross in the 55th minute. The same two players combined well in the 58th minute before Wilkes shot narrowly wide. As Greenhill tired Adders added two more goals in the 79th and 86th minute. The third was a superb lob from 25yds by Socket following a corner and Boggild seized on a loose ball in the area to round the keeper and score the fourth for what in the end was a comfortable success.

Adders Res 1-3 Bromsgrove Sporting Res    Nov 2, 2012

The reserve side put in a good performance on saturday but it wasn't enough as they were beaten by a strong Bromsgrove side. The Adders took the lead in the second minute when Liam Green's long free kick was headed on by Alan Miller for Joe Boggild to run onto & flick past the outrushing keeper. Atherstone caused Bromsgrove lots of problems early on & had a strong penalty appeal turned down. Bromsgrove then came into the game more as the half went on & levelled the score when the pacey winger centered to a Bromsgrove striker to slot home. Atherstone went close to going back in front with Miller & Potter both having goals narrowly ruled out for offside. H/T 1-1. Bromsgrove were very direct in the second half, relying on their pace going forward but it worked as the Adders defence got put under pressure & Bromsgrove took the lead when their forward got his second, flicking the ball in at the near post from a corner. Atherstone went more attacking in the last 20 minutes trying to get back into the game but after creating several half chances & having another penalty shout turned away they went further behind when bromsgrove broke quickly with the winger outpacing the defence down the left & getting a shot in which was superbly saved by Tom Leeson only for it to be followed up by an unmarked player to smash in. Cadbury Athletic Res 6-3 Adders Res    Oct 23, 2012

Saturday was a very disappointing game for Atherstones second string. Despite once again players pulling out of the squad the very morning of the match we still had a side that should have beaten Cadbury with ease. However this was not to be the case. Cadbury started off at a really high tempo and played some nice football and got a well deserved early goal. We managed to string a couple of passes together and Aaron Green scored a far post goal. Things were looking optimistic but spirits were soon dampened as the team stopped playing and Cadbury put the pressure on again. After some sloppy defending on our part Cadbury scored 2 goals in quick succession. It took us to go 2 goals behind before most of the lads woke up. We had a good 5 minute spell winning numerous corners and a couple of goal mouth scrambles. After one of the corners the assistant ref gave us a penalty which Aaron Green put away.

Half time: 3-2

Following some stern words at half time, the lads came out flying and playing some decent football. We pulled the 2 goal deficit back after some tidy football and a great cross from Aaron green for Jamie king to finish. But unfortunately could not maintain the tempo and allowed Cadbury to start playing again. After conceding goal number 4 the lads fell to pieces and soon the fifth and the sixth came.

Full time: 6-3

The lads need to put this game behind them and get fired up for next weeks opponents, undefeated Bromsgrove.

Adders fail to take chances    Oct 21, 2012

Atherstone Town 0 Stafford Town 1

A Smith shot saved low to his right by ONeill was the visitors first attempt on goal after 10 minutes. Shortly after the Adders should have taken the lead on two occasions. A slip in the Stafford defence let in Jordan Brown but he fired narrowly wide and then another defensive slip let in the same player but he lobbed the all straight at Stone. Matty Brown showed some of his electrifying pace in the 20th minute sprinting clear of the Stafford defence but his weak shot was straight at Stone. Stafford went one up in the 36th minute. A dubious free kick was awarded by referee Hughes midway inside the Adders half. The resulting free kick fell to Bennett who fired home from 6yds.

Half Time: 0-1

Again the second half started with Stafford in the ascendancy and Smith missed a golden chance when firing wide when Haynes presented him with the ball. Generally though the standard of play was poor not being helped by numerous stoppages for injuries and substitutions. It was only when Matt Brown was moved out to the right wing that Adders looked like scoring. He and Ashby supplied several crosses to at least give the away defence a few problems. Adders supporters had to wait until the 80th minute for their only chance. Yonwin headed the ball on to Latham but the midfielders volley flew well wide.

Adders Res 8-0 Castle Vale JKS Res    Oct 17, 2012

The Adders reserve side made a slow start to the game, it was very scrappy & end to end with a lot of long hopeful balls being played by both sides. After some early pressure from Vale the Adders settled into the game & began to play the better football & opened the scoring when King headed in Green's cross. Green then got a goal of his own running onto a through ball from Madden to round the keeper & slot home. H/T 2-0. The second half was dominated by the Adders who constantly opened up the Vale defence. King grabbed his second of the game flicking the ball in at the near post from another Green cross. Green again turned from provider to finisher dribbling in from the left & rifling into the top of the net. The fifth came from Miller slotting in at the far post from a drilled cross behind the Vale defence. Potter then got himself on the scoresheet running onto a ball over the top & neatly lifting it over the outrushing keeper. Man of the match Green got his hat-trick, placing the ball into the bottom right corner from the penalty spot after Potter was tripped in the box. Potter then got his second with virtually an identical goal to his first to round off the scoring. The Adders had numerous other chances to add to the scoreline & Vale had a few couple of chances of their own but found Leeson in the Adders goal in good form, making one great save with his feet at the end to keep a clean sheet.

Adders washed out in rain    Oct 14, 2012

Earlswood 6 Atherstone Town 1

Earlswood had most of the early possession but it was Adders who nearly scored in the 8th minute. A Brown cross to the far post was met by Webb sliding in but the ball passed just outside the post. The Adders went ahead after 33 minutes with a quite wonderful goal. A long cross field pass by Webb was met by Wilkes on the edge of the area and without breaking stride he unleashed a ferocious left footed shot across the keeper and into the far corner of the net. That should have acted as a springboard but in fact the Adders went into the break 2-1 down after two goals by Agbonlahor. The first after 35 minutes came when ONeill dropped a routine back pass and then in the 38th minute Selvester gave away the ball on the half way line and the Earlswood striker ran through to blast the ball passed ONeill.

Half Time: 2-1

Adders should have equalised in the 51st minute but Brown fired over from 6yds after a fine Wilkes run and cross. The rain and gloom then arrived making visibility difficult. Enough could be seen though of some quite woeful Adders defending as they just seemed to give up. Wills scored with a lob after 68 minutes, ONeill then dropped a routine corner onto the same players head two minutes later to make it 4-1. Wills and Agbonlahor both scored further goals against a non-existent Adders defence in the 72nd and 75th minutes. There could have been several more conceded in the final few minutes. Let us hope this is a mere blip, things have to improve v Stafford next Saturday.

Continental Star Res 2-2 Atherstone Town Res    Oct 8, 2012

The Adders reserves came back from 2-0 down to grab a point in the Challenge Urn. With 6 players pulling out of the squad overnight & two more being taken by the first team on saturday morning due to them also losing players at short notice meant the Reserves went to take on a strong Continental Star side with a squad of 12, manager Tim Read being the only sub. The game began badly for the Adders with Star starting very brightly & taking a 2-0 lead in the first 10 minutes, the first a powerful drive across keeper Tom Leeson after a Star forward got in behind the defence & the second a penalty after Lewis Palfreyman tripped his man in the box. Adders were then forced to make their one substitution with Read replacing Tom Turner in defence after he picked up a knee injury. Liam Potter went close to getting Adders back in the game when his deflected shot narrowly went over the bar & Alan Miller went even closer going through on goal but striking just wide of the post. H/T 2-0. The Adders came out in the second half looking a lot more up for a battle & caused Continental a lot of problems straight from the whistle & 5 minutes in pulled a goal back through Tyler Beeson, lobbing the keeper with a 30 yard strike on his competitive debut for the reserves side. Both sides had chances to get the next goal with both keepers being called into action. Star hit the post & then had a goal disallowed for a foul on Leeson but it was Adders who got the goal with 10 minutes remaining, Palfreyman hit a fierce shot from the edge of the area which the keeper tipped onto the post but Dan Creaney was there to head home the rebound. Adders had the momentum & pushed for the winner late on & nearly snatched the win when Miller squared the ball to Potter who's shot was saved by the keeper & that was the final act of the game. F/T 2-2.

Adders through in Cup    Oct 7, 2012

Atherstone Town 2 Pershore 1

Manager Mark Grainger took the opportunity of this cup game to give a few of the clubs promising younger players some experience. Not surprisingly the early play was disjointed with too many misplaced passes and wild shots to create much excitement in the crowd. Rogers blasted over for the visitors from close range in the 23rd minute while a Boggild volley just over the bar in the 30th minute was the Adders only real chance of the half. Indeed it was thanks to full back Grays goal line clearance in the 32nd minute that the teams went into the break on level terms. Pershores centre forward Congrave also had a fine chance to put his side into the lead but he shot wide with just ONeill to beat after 34 minutes.

Half Time: 0-0

Much more excitement at the start of the second half. Firstly Boggild thumped the post with a crisp shot from close range then Congrave for the visitors hit the crossbar with a looping header from around the penalty spot. Adders took the lead in the 57th minute. A long ball from Boggild glanced off a defenders head and fell to Ashby who rounded keeper Davis to score easily. The Adders defence paid the price for some hesitant defending in the 70th minute, having had three chances to clear the ball it fell to Hayes who beat ONeill with a low drive from a narrow angle. Pershores joy was short-lived though when substitute Socket grabbed what proved to be the winner after 73 minutes. He was allowed to turn in the area before curling a left foot shot passed Davis and just inside the post. Pershore had to play the last ten minutes with only 10 players when Selby was spotted by assistant Dick throwing two punches in an off the ball incident.

Even so Adders had to hang on at the end and ONeill made a fine save from Cooke in the dying seconds to put the Adders through to the next round.

Knowle Res 1-3 Adders Res    Oct 1, 2012

Adders dominated the majority of the game & should of hit the net a few more times creating numerous good chances throughout the game but 3 goals wrapped up the points. Charlie Reardon scored the first on his debut, working well down the left hand side all game with Aaron Green & after a one two with Green, Reardon hammered low across the keeper & in off the far post. Alan Miller was very busy up top & got his reward when he chased onto Luke Tyler's through ball, cut inside & bent into the far corner from just inside the box. Miller should of made it two but after some fantastic control & dribbling into the box pulled his shot wide of the target. H/T 0-2. Knowle got themselves back into the game within a couple of minutes of the second half when their tall striker outpaced the Adders defence to smash into the bottom corner past Jack Taylor on his debut in the Adders goal. Taylor made a couple of good saves with his feet before a long ball was headed over his own keeper & into the net by a knowle defender. The knowle keeper made some good saves late on to keep the score down. Potter & King both narrowly missed the target, Potter with a drive from the edge of the area just going wide & King a close range header over the bar. F/T 1-3.

Athersone Town 3 Racing Club Warwick 1

Things began badly for the Adders as they went behind in the 2nd minute. Tobin the Warwick keeper sent a huge kick into the Adders half which coincided with a strong gust of wind. The ball bounced high over Belfords head and into the net. Thereafter although Warwick played some neat football it was the Adders who created most of the chances. Wilkes and Brown both had good chances to equalise but Swinnerton should have increased Warwicks advantage in the 30th minute but he slipped when in front of an open goal 6yds out. Wilkess volley from a corner which flashed passed the post was another wasted opportunity.

Half Time: 0-1

Adders scored three goals in the second period to make the points safe. A Webb close range header in the 47th minute evened things up. Then a thunderbolt of a volley from 20yds by Latham gave the Adders the lead in the 50th minute. Warwick continued with their neat passing game but they lacked a cutting edge up front. They were unlucky however in the 65th minute when Belford made a fine reflex save following a goalmouth scramble. With Warwick playing with only two at the back it was always likely the Adders would score a third which they did in the 88th minute when Ashby broke clear and he sidefooted a cross for Wilkes to score easily.

Adders Dominate in Draw    Sep 23, 2012

Littleton 1 Atherstone Town 1

With the home side top of the table and beaten only once this season, this promised to be Mark Graingers sides toughest fixture of the season. The first half though failed to inspire the good sized crowd and circling buzzards and gliders above the ground generated more interest at this lovely setting on the edge of the Cotswold hills. A Tyler shot just wide early on for the Adders and a 40yd lob by Richardson for Littleton soon after which almost deceived ONeill were the only chances early on. Richardson nearly beat ONeill in the 40th minute with a quick turn and shot which the Adders keeper did well to stop, diving low to his right.

Half Time: 0-0

As at Bolehall any Adders fans late out of the bar (no pies apparently) for the second half missed the highlight of the game. After 47 minutes Wilkes sent in a high cross from the left wing and there was Socket to fire in a superb over-the-shoulder volley Wayne Rooney style from 12yds. An early contender for goal of the season. Littleton fought back strongly and Allards low drive was tipped onto the post by ONeill in the 52nd minute. Two minutes later came the equaliser. Adders gave away a free kick on the edge of the area and Fitter chipped the free kick neatly over the wall and into the far corner of the net. Adders fought back well and Socket again was unlucky to see his close range effort scrambled off the line in the 70th minute. With seven minutes left the home side were reduced to ten men. Socket and Walsh were involved in a harmless looking scuffle on the ground but for some reason the Littleton winger clearly stamped on the Adders midfielder and referee Lindsay had no option but to produce the red card. Adders surged forward at the end with Littleton hanging on but a Wilkes header just wide was their best effort.

A match full of good quality football in a league that is going to be very tough to win this year.

Adders Res 0-1 Walsall Wood Res    Sep 22, 2012

The Reserves had their first loss of the season today in the Challenge Urn. With several players unavailable from all the clubs teams in the last few weeks due to inury, work commitments, holidays, etc, the reserves have had a very unsettled side with lots of different players coming into the squad. Up until now they have still managed to pick up good results but didn't perform well today & although they were well in the game throughout came away with nothing after giving a sloppy goal away early in the game. Walsall Wood got off to a bright start looking very pacey & direct. They went in front after 10 minutes when a long diagonal ball caught the Adders defence on the back foot with a Walsall striker volleying at Belford in goal. Belford got a hand to the ball but it fell straight back to the striker who poked home. Dan Creaney nearly levelled the score but a fine save stopped his fierce drive from hitting the net. Jamie King then found himself one on one with the keeper from a ball over the top but didn't connect well with his shot which the keeper smothered. Adders seemed to run out of ideas when in possession having to play the ball back to Belford on numerous occasions to thump up field. Walsall were playing the better football & Belford was called into action to parry away a couple of long distance efforts just before half time. H/T 0-1. Adders came out second half & tried to settle on the ball & began to create a lot more chances after the introduction of Alan Miller who livened the attack up but still couldn't find the finishing touch. Adders had a big penalty shout turned away when Liam Potter played the ball in across the six yard box, Alan Miller couldn't find the touch to put it in & when the ball came to Aaron Green with an open net at the back post he was tripped by a defender with the ball bouncing off him as he went down to go wide & a goal kick was given. Adders pushed men forward late on to look for a goal & got caught on the counter attack a couple of times but Liam Davies & Ash Albrighton made fantastic last ditch tackles. Not a great performance overall but still had the chances to take something from the game. F/T 0-1.

Bolehall Swifts 1 Atherstone Town 2

The first half was certainly a more open affair than the match at Sheepy Road a few weeks earlier. The first real chance fell to Boggild who seized onto a Wilks cross at the far post but he saw his header flash wide. The home side opened the scoring in the 20th minute. Thompson saw his 20yd shot well tipped over by ONeill but from the subsequent corner the same player volleyed in unmarked at the far post. There was nearly an equaliser for the Adders soon after when a Johnson free kick was drilled into the area and Wilks saw his header sail just wide. Adders keeper ONeill was in superb form tipping a Reid free kick over the bar in the 40th minute before Boggild really should have equalised on the stroke of half time but his header from close range just cleared the cross bar.

Half Time: 1-0

Adders fans enjoying a second half time drink of which there were many, missed all the excitement at the start of the second period. In the 47th minute a Socket free kick into the area saw Swifts keeper McNulty and Latham challenge for the ball in the air, the ball fell for Boggild who volleyed in from 10yds. It got even better for the Adders in the 49th minute. A long ball out of defence found Wilks who controlled the ball well before volleying the ball across McNulty and into the corner of the net from 20yds. Adders defence had a few scares during the rest of the second half but with Reddish returning at the back the defence held firm. Bolehall were fortunate still to have eleven players on the pitch at the end after a Starkey tackle inside the area on Boggild left the Adders striker needing prolonged treatment.

Adders Res 1-0 Continental Star Res    Sep 16, 2012

A very hard earned victory for the reserves against a big strong Continental Star side who knocked the ball around well. First half Star had a lot of possession but didn't test Belford in the Adders goal. Adders struggled to keep possession resorting in playing a lot of hopeful long balls & also failed to test Continental's keeper. H/T 0-0. Second half the Adders picked up their game & 10 minutes in changed to a 3-5-2 formation with Lloyd Storey & Jamie King coming on upfront. The strikers made an impact straight away combining to get the goal with King slipping Storey through one on one & he neatly placed the ball into the bottom corner. The two caused Star many problems holding the ball up well & bringing the midfield into play. Adders were a lot sharper to the loose balls & closed Star down quickly when they were in possession which stopped them playing it around as in the first half. As the half went on Star pushed more men forward in search of a goal & got their chance when Dan Creaney tripped a Star forward in the box but he smashed his effort off the underside of the bar & Albrighton made a great tackle to stop the rebound being put it. Moments later Belford pulled off a good save getting down to claw out an overhead kick effort. Adders then caught Star on the break several times & should of sealed the win with King & Brindley missing close range chances but in the end one was enough.

Atherstone Town 0 Walsall Wood 3

High-flying Walsall Wood were always going to be a stiff test and so it proved in the opening 20 minutes as the visitors played some excellent quick passing football. Adders defence held firm however and an Aiton volley after 5 minutes was their only real chance. A Latham crisply hit volley from 20yds parried by Faultless after 9 minutes was Adders best chance. Gradually Adders asserted in midfield and after neat approach work in the 20th minute Culver fired over from close range. ONeill in the home goal tipped an Owen volley over the bar two minutes later and Boyce was unlucky to see his goal bound side-footed shot deflected narrowly wide on the stroke of half time.

Half Time: 0-0

Boyce gained compensation two minutes into the second half deceiving two Adders defenders before slotting the ball passed ONeill. Another simple goal was conceded in the 53rd minute. A neat header found Boyce unmarked in the area and he was not going to miss from 10yds. Gradually the Adders were managing to put some pressure on the Walsall defence and Wilks had two chances in the 62nd minute. Firstly his header was deflected over the bar and then a firmly hit free kick was pushed around the post by Faultless. An Eggleton header after 73 minutes and a Boggild header after 87 minutes were Adders only efforts on goal as they failed to put any real pressure on the Walsall Wood defence who had a pretty easy afternoon. Boyce completed his hat-trick just before the end to seal a comfortable victory for the visitors.

Castle Vale JKS Res 1-5 Adders Res    Sep 8, 2012

Not a great performance from the reserves but another win. It was nearly the perfect start when Luke Tyler rounded the Vale keeper to slot home in the first minute but for the flag to go up & rule it out. Although the passing & energy from the previous games wasn't to be seen the Adders still dominated possession & created numerous chances but folded infront of goal time after time with King, Tyler, Creaney & Mewies missing several good opportunities. Some of which were down to poor finishing but also some good saves from the Vale keeper. Eventually the ball hit the net with Tyler slotting home from the spot after Mewies was clipped in the box. H/T 0-1. Adders came out second half playing some great pass & move football & doubled the advantage within a couple of minutes when Creaney volleyed in from Green's corner. Green was the provider again soon after delivering the ball into the 6 yard box for King to bundle home for 0-3. Adders then once again took their foot off the gas & became complaicent which led to Vale creating a few scoring oppotunities. Leeson in the Adders goal saved a low shot with his foot then soon after Vale went one step closer by hitting the post & then they managed to get one back with a Vale midfielder going past two Adders defenders before slotting underneath Leeson. Atherstone then made a couple of changes upfront & Madden came on to finish the game off as a contest grabbing two goals, the first of which was a belter from 25 yards out at an angle flying into the top corner & not long after he got his second when Potter unselfishly rolled the ball across to him with them both clean through on goal. There were other chances to increase the scoreline with Potter & Brindley going close but it wasn't to be. F/T 1-5.

Reserves win against Tipton    Sep 5, 2012

The Reserves had a good win on Tuesday night against a sharp Tipton side. The game was very fast paced & end to end. Tipton got off to a flier going 0-1 up in the 2nd minute when Liam Davies played Tipton forward Chad Arblaster in on goal & he rounded Tom Leeson in the Adders goal to slot home. Davies made up for his error with a strong performance from then on doing a very good job in taming Jamie Mackam, the Tipton man of the match. Atherstone then started to knock the ball around well & it was the Adders man of the match, Kurtis Mewies who levelled the score at 1-1 after a neat exchange of passes & then he glided past two defenders to smash the ball into the far corner from the edge of the area in the 25th minute. Within a couple of minutes after the Adders goal it was nearly a second when Alan Miller's powerful header was magnificently tipped over the bar by Tipton keeper Luke Woodhall. Tipton then got on top & attacked the Adders defence numerous times but didn't manage to test Leeson. Atherstone took the lead against the run of play when Dan Creaney scored a header from Aaron Green's superb inswinging corner on 35 minutes. H/T 2-1. The game settled down a little in the second half with Atherstone controlling most of the play & limiting Tipton to a couple of half chances which Leeson dealt with comfortably. Adders should of rapped the game up in the final 20 minutes but after good play couldn't find the final touch infront of goal having several chances to put the game to bed. Gregg Webb & Alan Miller also had goals disallowed with the referee claiming a push in the build up to Webb's header from a free kick & Miller being narrowly offside. F/T 2-1.

Adders Comeback - Almost    Sep 2, 2012

Atherstone Town 2 Gornal Athletic 5

The match started at a frantic pace and both Sangha for the visitors and Boggild should have done better with gilt-edged chances early on. However Gornal went ahead after 11 minutes with Gater curling a low free kick around the Adders wall from just outside the area. Adders best chance was a Wilks 25yd free kick punched away by Pemberton. Then Ashby saw his neat header from Ricketts cross thump the Gornal crossbar. Roles were reversed in the 30th minute when Ricketts flicked an Ashby cross just wide. It was a fast and open game with both sides creating chance after chance, the difference between the two sides was in the quality of the finishing. A very dubious penalty in the 37th minute was converted by Rabone seconds after a very similar challenge on Ashby by a Gornal defender was ignored by referee Brooks. A turn and low shot by Sangha in the 40th minute made it 0-3 for Gornal. Adders should have reduced the deficit on the stroke of half time but Ashby failed to beat Pemberton when through on goal.

Half Time: 0-3

Adders roared forward at the start of the second period. Ashby reduced the arrears in the 53rd minute volleying in superbly from Boggilds cross. It was 2-3 in the 65th minute when Ashby seized on to a Yonwin through ball to slot it neatly low passed Pemberton. Adders were now well on top but a Boggild left footed volley from 25yds which was tipped over by the Gornal keeper was the closest they came to an equaliser. The effort of so many recent games seemed to catch up with the team towards the end and Gornal added too late goals via Weyman and Nisbet in the last five minutes to give the score a rather unfair look.

Adders in Exciting Draw    Aug 29, 2012

Atherstone 3 Bloxwich 3

Yonwin could easily have scored in the first minute. An Eggleton through ball found the Adders striker unmarked but Collins in the visitors goal saved well at his feet. The first half was lit up by two wonderful goals by Wilks. In the 14th minute the tall Adders striker latched onto a long clearance to lob Collins from 20yds. If that goal was good his second 4 minutes later was the best to be seen at Sheepy Road for a long time. Again a long clearance was headed on by Yonwin and Wilks unleashed a superb 30yd dipping volley high over the keeper and into the net. Bloxwich replied in the 36th minute in controversial circumstances. A low cross into the area was turned into his own net by Graham. Reeves the Bloxwich forward, was standing behind him in an offside position and interfering with play. After a long consultation with his assistant referee Spillett allowed the goal, much to the home fans surprise. Two minutes later it was 3-1 when Collins failed to claim a high cross, the ball broke loose and Yonwin made no mistake from 6yds. In a first half of pulsating entertainment Bloxwich scored a second when Joyce cut in from the right wing to fire a low shot passed ONeill low to his left.

Half Time: 3-2

With the wind behind, Bloxwich came more into the game in the second period and Bloxwichs Wilks saw his header brilliantly tipped over by ONeill. The Adders keeper could do little to keep out the Bloxwich equaliser in the 65th minute when Justin rose at the far post to head in powerfully. Substitute Boggild could have sealed in for the Adders but his low shot with just Collins to beat flew narrowly wide.

Lichfield City 1 Athersone 4

Atherstone were soon on top, Eggleton should have scored as early as the 3rd minute but he sidefooted his shot wide of an open goal from 8yds. Yonwin then headed just over from a Johnson cross. Lichfields defence had no answer to Adders front line and the match was settled with three goals in eight minutes. In the 14th minute a Latham cross was converted by Wilks from 12yds, then in the 20th minute an Eggleton corner was met with a thumping header at the back post by Yonwin. The third goal came in the 22nd minute when Yonwin again seized onto a loose backpass to chip the Lichfield keeper as he advanced. Johnson in the home goal denied Yonwin his hat trick with a superb save from a header after an inch perfect cross by Boal. Lichfield began to put some moves together towards the end of the half and Ashmore saw his angled drive strike the post and then the same player had a 25yd free kick tipped around the post by ONeill.

Half Time: 0-3

Adders had two chances to increase their lead right at the start of the second half but Yonwin and Boal both shot narrowly wide from close range. Generally though the game was suffering from too many stoppages with a succession of injuries holding up play including to Boal who limped off with an injured ankle in the 55th minute. In the 68th minute Adders finally put together a fine passing move which set Wilks free and he rounded the home keeper to make it 0-4. The scoring was completed in the 75th minute when the referee awarded Lichfield a soft penalty, converted by Snape.

Brocton 1 Atherstone 4

Atherstone began hesitantly on their first visit to Broctons splendid new ground in Stafford and went one down after just 5 minutes. A corner to the far post found Lomas who headed in unchallenged. The rest of the first half belonged to the Adders who played their best football of the season. In the 26th minute Olanipekun did well to reach the bye line and his cross was headed in by Wilks from ten yards. Five minutes later it was Wilks again, beating Whitehouse in the home goal low to his right from well outside the area. It was 3-1 to the Adders after 35 minutes and this time it was Boal with a low 20yd shot in off the post. Wilks completed his hat-trick in the 41st minute again with a low 20yd shot that took a slight deflection past the home keeper.

Half Time: 1-4

The second half took place in bizarre circumstances. A bonfire from a nearby garden caused thick smoke to engulf the ground making visibility poor especially in the dimly lit corners. However from what could be seen it was a case of much Brocton possession but little impression being made on a resolute Adders back line. In a breakaway, Boal appeared to be brought down by the keeper, not spotted by the referee in the gloom whilst ONeill had only two saves to make, the best in the 75th minute, hurling himself low to his left to keep out a Brocton free kick, Wilks could have had a fourth just before the end, missing a cross at the far post by inches. The match finished in a torrential downpour - at least it cleared the smog!

Adders surged forward from the off. A mistake by a Blackwood defender near the halfway line let in Culver and his accurate through ball found Yonwin who beat Mills at his near post. Nurse and Larmour both had long distance shots that went close but Adders made it 2-0 in the 19th minute. Yonwin was the provider this time and his defence splitting pass found Ashby who blasted the ball passed Mills. Boggild should have made it three in the 34th minute but he scuffed his shot with just the keeper to beat. Blackwood were having the majority of the possession but had little to offer up front as the Adders defence dominated. Yonwin was unlucky just before the break when his angled drive thumped the crossbar.

Again in the second half Blackwood were having lots of possession but the Adders attack always looked dangerous and it was no surprise after 68 minutes when a Boal through ball found the superb Yonwin who finished neatly with a chip over Mills. Adders completed the scoring in the 78th minute. A fine dribble down the left wing by Socket led to an inch perfect cross which Boal gleefully hammered high into the roof of the net from 6yds.

Adders Exit Cup    Aug 13, 2012

Pilkington 5 Atherstone 4

Chapman had two good chances to open the scoring for the home side inside the opening 10 minutes, but ONeill saved both well. However, the Adders keeper was at fault after 12 minutes, dropping a high cross at Powers feet, he laid the ball off to Chapman who had a simple task from 8yds. Adders were back on level terms within 45 seconds, Yonwin bursting through a static home defence before rounding the hesitant Sanders in the home goal and walking the ball into the net. Things got even better for the Adders on the stroke of half time. Boggilds superb run down the right led to an inch perfect cross to Yonwin who blasted the ball into the roof of the net from close range.

Half Time: 1-2

It was 2-2 within 30 seconds of the restart when Deeley curled a fine 20yd shot high passed ONeill. Adders regained the lead after 48 minutes. The excellent Boggild cut in from the left and with the outside of his right foot drilled a superb shot low passed Sanders left hand. In the 60th minute the referee who up to this point had been irritating both sides with his inability to play the advantage law awarded Pilkington a penalty. The ball struck an Adders defenders arm as he was clearly trying to get out of the way and it was a clear case from close range of ball to hand but the referee thought otherwise. Power made it 3-3 from the spot. The same player put the hosts 4-3 up with a neat free kick over the Adders wall in the 70th minute. It was all square 5 minutes later with an equally ludicrous penalty decision. Boal stooped low to try to head in a right wing cross and the ball was hacked clear. However, the referee somehow saw it as dangerous play and Yonwin completed a superb hat trick from the spot, 4-4. Surely the Adders could hang on for a replay but unfortunately not. With only injury time left a low cross from the left found Chapman and the Pilkington striker gleefully bundled the ball over the line.

A very disappointing result for the club with no hope now of any of the financial rewards a cup run can bring, though for the neutral a tremendous game of football.

Adders Dominate in Win    Aug 8, 2012

Atherstone Town 3 Castle Vale 0

With former Adders legend, Roy Dunkley, upfront Vale were going to be stiff opposition. So it proved in the opening quarter as they dominated play with Learnihan causing problems on the wing with his pace. Gradually though the Adders midfield started to dominate and chance after chance was created. Latham twice headed over from close range, Graham vollied over from 6yds out in the 30th minute Boggild and Hind both should have scored before on the stroke of half time Latham forced a fine save from another ex Adder, Stannage, in the visitors goal.

Half Time: 0-0

It was deja vue in the second half when Eggleton hit his volley straight at Stannage. Vales first effort was a Barfield shot, headed off the line by Graham. Finally after 55 minutes, Hind burst down the left wing and his accurate cross was tucked away from 6yds by Boggild. Adders second arrived in the 63rd minute. A long Stain cross into the area was neatly tucked away on the volley by Yonwin from an acute angle. Adders were now well on top and it was no surprise when they added a third. Grahams header looked to be going wide but Vale substitute Acton headed the ball into his own net.

Adders start with a Win    Aug 5, 2012

Atherstone Town 1 Bromsgrove Sporting 0

With a spectacular electrical storm overhead, Adders kicked off the season facing a Bromsgrove side promoted last season from Division 1. Morrison, for the visitors, headed just over after 12 minutes but Atherstone were unlucky in the 16th minute when a smart turn and shot by Yonwin saw his effort strike the post low down. Boggild saw his close range effort well saved by Mole in the Bromsgrove goal in the 27th minute. However, the tall striker gave Adders the lead after 40 minutes. A right wing cross found Boggild near the penalty spot and he swivelled to hit a firm shot which Mole got his hands to but could not keep from crossing the line. The ever dangerous Morrison nearly scored an equaliser soon after but home keeper, Slater bravely dived at his feet. The same player missed a sitter just before the break, blazing over from close range.

Half Time: 1-0

Boggild headed wide soon after the break but the second period saw Bromsgrove in the ascendancy. Full back Deehans 30yd free kick scraped the bar after 55 minutes, Blake scuffed his shot when clear in the 6yd box five minutes later and Brookes saw his 78th minute free kick go straight to Slater. Adders best effort saw Eggleton fly down the left wing before crossing just behind Boggild. However, the striker managed to get in an overhead kick which flew inches wide. Adders defence which struggled through much of last season was magnificent as Bromsgrove threw everything at them in the final minutes. Deehans cross was tipped over by Slater in the 89th minute. Then the on-loan Nuneaton keeper produced two fine re-action saves in injury time before Rogers hit the home cross bar with a free kick right at the end.

For once it was the Adders day, lets hope it is many times more throughout the rest of the season.

Adders Comeback Almost    Apr 29, 2012

Atherstone 2 Studley 3

Adders should have taken the lead after 30 seconds. Boal raced down the right and his centre was somehow missed by Chapman with the goal vacant. Studley's first effort was an O'Brian lob just over the bar after White lost the ball in the area. After a bright start Adders defence was looking decidedly jittery. Hathaway made yet another top save in the 20th minute, fisting away a Dowsett drive with the striker bearing down on goal. It was no surprise when the same player scored the first goal after 28 minutes sliding the ball passed an exposed Hathaway. If anything the uncertainties in the home defence became worse with defenders on several occasions losing the ball when a clearance into the pub car park was a better alternative. Studley grabbed a second in the 40th minute. A left wing corner fell to the unmarked Brown who poked the ball home from 8yds.

Half Time: 0-2

The match was transformed in the 48th and 51st minutes as the Adders side tore into Studley's defence from the whistle. Firstly Boal seized onto a Bailey pass before rounding the keeper and scoring from an acute angle. Then a right wing cross found Baker 6yds out and the young striker sidefooted the ball home from close range. The impetus could not be sustained however and the match settled into a pattern of Adders possession and Studley stern defence. The visitors grabbed the winner in the 86th minute. A long left wing cross seemed a routine catch for the normally excellent Hathaway but he somehow misjudged the flight and dropped the ball at the feet of the grateful Dowsett who tapped in a simple chance from close range. Boggild and Boal did their best to grab a point at the end but they were both thwarted by Taylor in the visitors goal.

A sad end but relegation could still be avoided with a win over highflying Westfields next Saturday.

Adders Battle Against Odds    Apr 29, 2012

Westfields 4 Atherstone 1

Adders needed a win to have any chance of staying in the Midland Alliance but were 1-0 down in the 14th minute. A right wing free-kick was headed home by the unmarked Glover. Hopes rose in the 34th minute when Farley seizing onto an equisite slide rule pass by Purslow rounded Moore to score easily. However they went into the interval one goal in arrears when Kear scored from close range after a scrappy build up.

Half Time: 2-1

Farley stung Moore's fingers with a rasping 20yd drive just after the break but Kear and Cross scored for Westfields in the 60th and 80th minutes as Adders went down to the Midland Combination with a whimper.

Coleshill win relegation battle    Apr 15, 2012

Coleshill 2 Atherstone 1

Adders were soon on the attack and home 'keeper Jay was forced to clatter into Farley as the striker bore down on goal. Nothing came of the subsequent free kick but although Farley was able to continue, the injury sustained meant he left the pitch soon after the break. The rest of the first half was a scrappy affair. Hakner hit the cross bar for the home team in the 12th minute but their best chance was a penalty kick awarded after 30 minutes. Stringer's challenge on Gregory seemed a fair one but referee Noyce thought otherwise. Carter's kick was well saved by Hathaway diving low to his left. The ball then clipped the cross bar as Brush followed up.

Half Time: 0-0

Coleshill went ahead in the 52nd minute when Brush fired in from 12yds after being given too much space in the area. Boal and Ashby combined well in the 66th minute only for Boal to be brought down. Holmes's penalty kick was well saved by Jay. Coleshill's second came after 67 minutes when Carter rounded Hathaway and tapped the ball into the empty net. Baker scored a penalty after 75 minutes to reduce the arrears but hard though they tried they could not get the equaliser. Both Ashby and Socket should have done better with goal chances in the last five minutes.

Adders Dominate in Draw    Apr 10, 2012

Atherstone 1 Kirby Muxloe 1

The visitors had the advantage of the slope and strong wind in the first period and the Adders found it difficult to mount any attacks. Kirby took the lead in the 18th minute. A long free kick to the far post found Law unmarked who headed in firmly. Some neat passing between Boal and Farley saw the latter round keeper Holyoak but his shot was dragged just wide. A Socket free kick in the 27th minute was straight at the keeper as was an Ashby angled drive in the 41st minute. The highlight of the first half came just before the break. Ashby managed to get to the bye line and his centre was vollied narrowly wide by Farley.

Half Time: 0-1

The second half was one of the Adders dominance with the visitors hardly able to mount an attack. Chances were few though until the 75th minute when Baker just failed to scramble home a left wing corner. Farley was foiled by a tremendous tackle by Wilson soon after and Ashby saw his low shot well saved by Holyoak in the 80th minute. Finally the equaliser came in the 85th minute from an unlikely source. Goalkeeper Hathaway took a free kick just inside his own half. The ball landed near the penalty spot before sailing over the keeper and into the roof of the net with Douglas distracting Holyoak. This was the signal for a siege of the Kirby goal but despite throwing the kitchen sink at the opposition there were no clear chances created and the visitors with a rare breakaway could have grabbed a winner but Hathaway did well to tip over a Mason shot.

Adders outfight Gresley    Apr 8, 2012

Gresley 1 Atherstone 1

Adders should have had all three points but for a linesman error

Adders were soon on the attack and Farley was unlucky with a header cleared off the line following a tenth minute corner. Soon after a defence splitting pass by Ashby found Holmes but his shot was smothered by Gutteridge. They took a well deserved lead in the 16th minute, with a delightful goal. Holmes right wing cross found Ashby in the Gresley six yard box and his lay off was blasted high into the net by Farley from 10yds. Gresley came closest in the first half when following a fine White sliding tackle, the ball flew just over the bar from 20yds.

Half Time: 0-1

As was to be expected the home side started the second period on the offensive but Adders could easily have grabbed a second in the 48th minute. Farley found Holmes with a superb through ball but his shot was well blocked by the 'keeper. Substitute Massingham wasted a great chance in the 60th minute for Gresley but the game hinged on a controversial decision by the referee in the 70th minute Douglas and Massingham were both chasing after a through ball and Douglas appeared to make a brilliant tackle. Hathaway picked up the ball and cleared. However the linesman who was much further away than the referee deemed it a back pass and after long protests by the Adders players Gresley scored from the indirect free kick inside the penalty area. Goodfellow and Gough both wasted good chances for Gresley but Adders could have grabbed a winner in the 83rd minute. A mazy Bahrey run down the left and an accurate pass found Baker unmarked but his shot was smothered by the Gresley keeper. Adders clung on bravely towards the end. Jepson and Holmes were both shown the red card in injury time for Gresley.

A superb battling performance but unfortunately other results did not go in their favour.

Adders fight back    Apr 8, 2012

Atherstone 2 Bridgnorth 3

Bridgnorth were the form team coming into this fixture and in the first half they dominated proceedings. A Pike 30yd over the shoulder volley and a Buxton free kick both flew dangerously close to Hathaway's goal in the first 15 minutes. They took the lead in the 21st minute with a corner to the far post headed in by the unmarked Whitney. A second goal arrived in the 32nd minute. Again a cross to the far post and this time it was Bond who supplied the finishing touch.

Half Time: 0-2

It really was a game of two halves as Adders mounted a great fight back after the break. Reynolds forced Crook to a fine diving save in the 50th minute and Bailey should have converted a Reynolds cross from only six yds soon after. A White 30yd volley and a Holmes low drive were other Adders chances as the home side dominated. They got a goal back in the 67th minute when Boggild headed in at the far post. Adders fans joy was short lived however when Griffiths ran through the home defence and slotted the ball under Hathaway to make it 1-3. Socket nearly grabbed a goal back in the 79th minute but his close range effort flew just over. Baker made it 2-3 in injury time but too little time was left for what would have been a deserved equaliser.

Adders Win Tough Battle    Mar 29, 2012

Atherstone 1 Rocester 0

Langston forced Hathaway to make a fine save in the first minute after cutting in from the right wing whereas Adders first chance was in the 10th minute when Farley fired over whilst under pressure from Rocester 'keeper Froggatt following a neat approach play by Ashby. Socket nearly gifted the visitors a goal in the 26th minute when his attempted clearance somehow landed in Adders six yard box forcing Hathaway to make two fine saves and Stringer a fine block to keep the ball out. The highlight of the first half was a brilliant sliding tackle on the half way line by Selvester when it appeared Rocester were through on goal. His pass set up Ashby who fired over.

Half Time: 0-0

Adders began brightly in the second half with a Socket free kick causing Froggatt to save low to his right. The goal their play deserved came in the 55th minute. Mewies was upended near the penalty spot and Holmes struck the penalty well high to the 'keepers right. The crucial incident of the second half came in the 65th minute. McComisky was sent off for what appeared to be a stamp on Ashby and then Rocester were down to nine players when Holland was sent off for dissent. As often happens Rocester's nine players played better the the eleven and Hathaway was again Adders saviour with a brilliant reaction save from Nadat. Roberts saw his 30yd volley well saved by Froggatt just before the end and Adders hung on to a welcome and well deserved three points.

Referee Ruins Match    Mar 25, 2012

Atherstone 0 Tividale 1

The visitors had the better of the opening exchanges and Kettle saw his volley from a Williams cross sail just wide in the 8th minute. Tividale took the lead in the 15th minute. Dodds beat White on the left wing and his cross was converted by Taylor from 6yds at the far post. Adders were struggling to put any coherant moves together but Boal did well to meet a Holmes corner at the near post but he saw his header fly just wide.

Half Time: 0-1

The first 15 minutes of the second half was dominated by the incessant whistling of referee Parker who seemed to think any physical contact deserved a free kick and then spent ages talking to players. In the 65th minute a right wing cross seemed to sail harmlessly over the penalty area. The referee however deemed Douglas to have impeeded the Tividale forward and awarded the visitors a penalty. He then showed a second yellow to the Adders defender which meant Adders were down to ten players for the last half hour. There was some justice though and Russell placed his low kick wide of Hathaway's right hand post. The home side fought back well and seemed to play better with 10 men. Very few chances were created however and Holmes' fine run and cross in the 75th minute which flew across the 6yd box was the highlight. Tividale could have sewn it up towards the end of the match but Hathaway made a tremendous block when faced with Cox and Dodds advancing unmarked towards him. Shame about the referee. Why do assessors make themselves known?

Adders Dominate Again    Mar 22, 2012

Boldmere 0 Atherstone 0

Adders were well worth their point and should have had all three.

Adders had a lucky escape in the 8th minute when White gave the ball away but after a fine Hathaway save Holmes shot against the post. Adders Holmes was then unlucky with a 20yd free kick just wide. Chances were few and far between during the rest of the first half with Baker going close for the Adders and Keithley forcing Hathaway to a full length save in the 35th minute.

Half Time: 0-0

Most of the action came in the final 20 minutes. Mewies was a constant threat down the right and his run and cross deserved better than Boggilds finish over the bar. Hathaway was called into action twice in the 75th minute making two fine saves from Smith. A Donaghy free kick just wide in the 85th minute was Boldmere's best chance but Adders could have won it in the last five minutes. Firstly a Weale shot was deflected into Roberts path but his snap shot from 8yds was just over. Then in injury time a mazy Weale run left him with just the keeper to beat but he shot straight at Butler.

Adders on top    Mar 18, 2012

Alvechurch 0 Atherstone 0

Adders were first on the offensive and had claims for a penalty in the second minute when Bogglid fell in the six yard box. Boal was then one on one with the 'keeper but he scuffed his shot wide. Adders best chance fell to Boal again in the 15th minute after a fine run down the left by Bahrey but again his shot was off target. A Sockett 20yd shot straight at Gwilliams in the 24th minute and a Boal header just wide in the 34th minute were Adders other chances. The home side came into things in the last ten minutes with Borrey and Wills both testing Hathaway with long range efforts.

Half Time: 0-0

Adders were again left disappointed in the 48th minute when Bahrey fell in the area after a fine left wing run. The same player forced Gwilliams to a fine save in the 49th minute after a defence splitting pass by Boal. Bahrey again should have done better with a weak shot from 20yds when left unmarked in the 65th minute. Adders best chance came from a 71st minute corner but Chapman saw his firm header cleared off the line. The home side had yet to have a clear chance but Wright forced Hathaway to a brilliant save to tip a 25yd free kick around the post in the 78th minute. Substitutes Mewies and Kirchoff-Sleet both had clear chances in injury time to win it for the Adders but both shot well wide.

A useful point for the Adders in a match played on a bobbly which did not help the quality of passing. Lots of half chances mostly for the Adders but a fine Hathaway save towards the end secured a well deserved draw.

Adders Below Par    Mar 16, 2012

Atherstone 0 Stratford 3

Defensive lapses cost the Adders dear as they lost to a Stratford side they had beaten comfortably earlier in the season. The away side opened the scoring in the 17th minute. Beckley hit a low free kick from 20yds passed the defensive wall. It seemed to be a routine save for Hathaway but the ball somehow creeped under his diving body. Stratford were two up in the 36th minute when Murphy caught the Adders defence on the break. His cross was well hit by Travis but straight at the Adders keeper but again the ball bounced off his chest and into the corner of the net. Adders best effort on goal was a 25yd volley by Bahrey.

Half Time: 0-2

More poor defending, this time by Lake, gifted Stratford their third goal two minutes into the second half. He lost the ball inside the area and the ball fell for Murphy who tapped the ball into the vacant net from 6yds. Adders had lots of possession without creating too many chances though Boggild was unlucky with an excellent volley on the turn from a Mewies cross in the 75th minute. The night ended with Ashby being carried off with ten minutes remaining and thus having to play the rest of the match with 10 players.

Adders Superb Display    Mar 11, 2012

Causeway 1 Atherstone 2

Adders made a bright start but the early chances fell to the home side. Lloyd headed just wide after three minutes and soon after fired in a 20yd volley that was scrambled away by Hathaway. However the Adders keeper was not so fortunate in the 23rd minute when after saving well from Lloyd again experienced striker Bellingham followed up to tap the ball into the vacant net. Adders fought back well. Boal and Ashby combined but the former shot straight at Turner after 25 minutes and then two minutes later the same combinations linked up but Boal's long range shot was deflected into the 'keepers hands. Adders got their reward six minutes before the interval. Ashby sent in a superb low cross to the far post where Socket at full stretch somehow managed to turn the ball in from an acute angle.

Half Time: 1-1

Hathaway yet again was Adders saviour in the second period. Straight from the kick off he had to tip over a Field shot and then after 62 minutes he brilliantly turned a Bellingham drive around the post. As in the first half the visitors gradually worked their way back into the match and Boal saw his 62 minute close range effort well saved by Turner. It was now Adders who were well on top with the midfield passing the ball expertly and it was no surprise when they grabbed a second goal after 71 minutes. Some superb passing down the left wing left Bahrey with space to cross to the far post where Holmes was on hand to side-foot the ball home from close range. As Causeway pressed for an equaliser Adders could well have grabbed a third and were unlucky when Boglitt saw his scuffed shot roll along the goal line, hit the post and was hacked clear.

A top class show from the young Adders side. Stout defending at times but also some wonderful passing against a team lying fourth in the league. Keep a look out for new signing Bahrey who looked real class on his first appearance.

Adders Win    Mar 5, 2012

Atherstone 2 Highgate 0

The first half was a poor affair with neither side able to use the excellent playing surface to their advantage. Highgate's Tandy saw his 20yd volley whistle just passed Hathaway's post after 11 minutes and a Douglas header nearly fell for Boal six minutes later. The rest of the half is best forgotten.

Half Time: 0-0

Thankfully the second period was a much more lively affair. Douglas saw his header sail over the bar in the 51st minute while the lively Jackson for Highgate tested Hathaway with a low shot in the 58th minute. Adders could well have had a penalty in the 63rd minute when Mewies seemed to have his legs taken from under him near the penalty spot but referee Cairns waved play on. Jackson again was the only Highgate player causing Adders defence any problems and Hathaway again did well to turn his 65th minute shot around the post. Finally the Adders broke the deadlock in the 67th minute with a simple goal. A right wing corner found the unmarked Ashby at the far post who headed in off the underside of the crossbar. Adders made the points safe with three minutes remaining when with Highgate looking for the equaliser Adders caught them on the break. A Holmes cross missed out everyone but when the ball was played back across the area Boal was on hand to drive the ball in from close range.

Adders Gain Point    Feb 26, 2012

Tipton 2 Atherstone 2

After a month's inactivity it was no surprise to see the Adders off the pace in the opening twenty minutes. In only the 2nd minute a long throw into the visitors area landed at Waite's feet and he made no mistake from 6yds. It was all Tipton and Henley should have done better with a header after 21 minutes which flew passed Hathaway's post. Gradually the Adders midfield fought their way back into the game and some neat play between Boal and Holmes on the touchline deserved a much better cross. The equaliser deservedly came after 40 minutes. Socket got the ball to the bye line and despite a crunching tackle by the Tipton full back crossed to the far post where Farley stroked the ball home.

Half Time: 1-1

Again Tipton struck early in the second period when their danger man Tonks ran through the centre of the Adders defence before beating Hathaway with a low shot. Adders equalised five minutes later. Mewies latched on to a Douglas through ball on the right wing and crossed to the far post where Farley headed the ball back across goal for Boal to stab home from close range. It was developing into an exciting end to end match with the odd crunching tackle thrown in. Tipton had a goal disallowed for offside in the 61st minute but the clearer chances fell to the Adders. In the 63rd minute Tipton keeper Collins did well to turn a low Ashby volley around the post and in the 70th minute a Mewies 20yd shot seemed destined for the top corner until Collins leapt to turn it over. Adders could have won it with the last kick of the game when Holmes with only the 'keeper to beat sidefooted the ball against his legs.

Ellesmere Dominate Adders    Jan 29, 2012

Adders did not play badly, but Ellesmere were physically too strong

Those Adders fans who made the long trip to the Welsh Border were rewarded with a glorious sunny day and they saw their team soon on the attack. Washburne had good claims for a penalty after only 7 minutes when he appeared to be shoved in the face by Cathrall just inside the area but referee Dean waved play on. The home side took the lead after 19 minutes. Ward cut in from the left wing and fired a low shot passed Hathaway's right hand, Adders keeper though showed excellent handling skills for the remainder of the half catching several awkward crosses and after 41 minutes reacted quickly to dive at the feet of Ward when the striker was through on goal. Adders meanwhile struggled to trouble home keeper Maguire.

Half Time: 1-0

Farr missed a glorious chance a minute into the second half heading over with just Hathaway to beat but finally Adders started showing some of the crisp passing they had displayed at Heather and Studley. The equaliser came in the 59th minute Washburne crossed from the left and found the unmarked Ashby at the far post who shot low under the diving Maguire. They did not have long though to press home their advantage as Ellesmere scored two goals in the next five minutes. Firstly a cross from the left wing was tucked home by Farr and then it was 3-1 in the 65th minute. Lake gave away a penalty with a rash challenge and this was easily converted by Butler. Adders never gave up and the home side were under severe pressure at the end but there were no more clear-cut chances and on the day the result just about reflected the overall play.

Holmes Hatrick    Jan 22, 2012

Studley 1 Atherstone 4

Adders continued their great form with a wonderfully taken hatrick by Jordan Holmes

Adders were dominant from the start with Studley unable to match their crisp passing style and it was no surprise when they took the lead in the 8th minute. A Washburne free kick was hit low into the area to Boal who laid it into Baker's path who made no mistake with a fierce shot from near the penalty spot. It was 0-2 four minutes later when Holmes tapped in from close range following an accurate Baker cross. Studley eventually regained some composure with Hathaway forced to make one fine save but it was Adders again who nearly increased their lead when after a neat 1-2 between Holmes and Boal the latter shooting just over the bar.

Half Time: 0-2

Holmes and Washburne both had long range efforts well saved by Taylor after the break whereas Studley's centre forward Dowsett should have done much better with a close range header after he eluded the away defence but his effort drifted tamely wide. It was 0-3 after 62 minutes. The excellent Boal crossed from the left to find Holmes unmarked and he finished from 10yds with a neat shot under Taylor's body. Studley got a goal back with a penalty soon after but the victory was sealed after 75 minutes. Mewies was brought down by the penalty spot and Holmes completed his hat-trick with a firm shot to Taylor's right. Boal nearly grabbed a deserved goal just before the end but his volley sailed just over the bar.

Adders Go Close    Jan 15, 2012

After a poor first half, the Adders could have gained a point

Atherstone 0 Gresley 1

Atherstone's famous tropical climate meant the Sheepy Road pitch was playable whereas other local games were called off. The best crowd of the season saw Adders make a bright start and Holmes had his low shot parried by Gutteridge before Mewies left one on one with the 'keeper lobbed the ball just wide. The rest of the half though saw the visitors on top with Turville a constant threat. Hathaway made fine saves for the Adders in the 7th and 17th minutes and then in the 30th minute an amazing scramble in the Adders 6yd box eventually saw the ball hacked clear. Soon after a Turville header was well saved by the impressive Hathaway. Adders defence was finally breached in the 40th minute. A cross by centre half Nottingham appeared to be put into the net by the shoulder of the flying Turville.

Half Time: 0-1

Adders came out after the break with much more purpose and after yet another goal line scramble in the home 6yd box the ball was cleared to Baker when running in on goal and with just Gutteridge to beat blasted his shot well over. Ten minutes later Adders had good claims for a penalty turned down when Weale appeared to be pushed over. However it was Gresley's Turville who came closest to increasing their lead but he saw his effort after 72 minutes ruled out for offside after the ball came back off a post. The last ten minutes saw Adders battling hard but unable to create any clear-cut chances against probably the strongest team to visit Sheepy Road this season.

Adders Confident Win    Jan 9, 2012

Adders 1 Willenhall 0

After the superb victory at Heather, Adders looked full of confidence and Weale let fly with a fierce right foot shot after only 2 minutes which warmed Flynns hands. They should have opened the scoring four minutes later when after a mazy run down the right by Mewies, his cross somehow eluded everyone. Willenhall showed they could be dangerous on the break and Reece went close after 16 minutes with a low shot just passed Hathaways left hand post. Generally though Adders were dominant with Boal twice and Holmes seeing 20 yd shots go close. Willenhall came more into play towards the end of the half and their best chance fell to Fellows but his shot was well smothered by Hathaway. Adders keeper was called into action on the stroke of half time, tipping over a Smith header.

Half Time: 0-0

Boal was unlucky three minutes into the second half when after neat footwork his 20yd shot rattled the cross bar. Clews hit a long range shot just wide for the visitors but generally it was Adders on top but unable to convert a string of clear chances. Boal played a neat 1-2 with Weale but he shot wide after 55 minutes then in the 60th minute Boal again saw his shot rebound off the keeper. It seemed as Adders were never going to score especially when Weale scuffed his shot in front of an open goal. Finally, in the 78th minute after a free kick out on the right the ball fell to impressive substitute Baker who volleyed the ball into the roof of the net from 6yds. Adders task was made easier after 88 minutes when extremely tolerant referee, Mr Hall, finally lost patience with Willenhalls Fellows and sent him to the changing rooms.

Adders Outplay Heather    Jan 3, 2012

Adders destroyed Heather for 90 minutes

Adders Management ensured that it was total embarassment for Brookes Heather by far superior tactical know how and management skills.

Once again the fantastic Atherstone supporters trebled the home gate. New 'keeper Hathaway made an early save but this was to prove the home side's only worthwhile effort in a half dominated by the Adders. Boal and Mewies both had early shots on target and Holmes was unlucky to see his 25 yd drive go straight to home 'keeper Brassington. Adders took a deserved lead after 29 minutes. Boal saw yet another shot parried by Brassington but in the ensuing scramble Weale lifted the ball over him from 6yds. Weale then saw his powerful header from a Boal cross tipped over the bar and on the stroke of half time Socket seemed to forget which end of the pitch he was clearing the ball off the Heather goal line instead of scoring.

Half Time: 0-1

Heather fluked an equaliser after 51 minutes when Carline struck a low angled drive passed Hathaway. Normal service was soon resumed though with the Adders midfield in total control and after a long period of pressure Boal glanced a Weale cross passed Brassington from 6 yds to make it 1-2. Soon after Ridsdill saw his header cleared off the line by Meer and then in the 75th minute a Weale cross was deflected onto his own post by a Heather defender. Adders made sure of all three points a few moments later when Ridsdill headed in Holmes header at the far post.

One of Adders best performances of the season with some of the passing and running off the ball a joy to behold

10 men Adders miss chances    Dec 27, 2011

Kirby Muxloe 3 Adders 1

Ten Men Adders could have won

A large Adders following almost tripled the normal home attendance but the match could not have begun any worse when Ridsdill was adjudged to have brought down Taylor when through on goal and was shown the red card after only three minutes. Kirby opened the scoring after 14 minutes when Taylor beat Belford with a firm drive from 18yds. Adders though should have gone into the break on equal terms. Holmes cut in from the wing and his cross was missed by both Boal and Washburne in front of an empty net.

Half Time: 1-0

The theme of missed chances continued after the break. Law for Kirby somehow managed to hit the post when unmarked 6yds out. Then Washburne should have scored with a close range header. Meanwhile, Belford was having a fine game and after 62 minutes dived at Taylor's feet when the striker was through on goal. After 74 minutes Boal missed another great chance dragging his shot wide from only 6yds out. With six minutes to go Purslow was too slow to clear and Law nipped in to score Kirby's second. Substitute James slotted home from close range in the 88th minute to give the Adders some hope but Taylor grabbed his second just before the end to restore the home side's two goal advantage.

Adders in Great Comeback    Dec 27, 2011

Adders 2 Coleshill 2

Atherstone's decision to play on Christmas Eve was well rewarded with a bumper crowd including many visiting the ground for the first time and several who had made long journeys. However it was Coleshill who bossed the midfield in the first half. They took the lead in the 16th minute when Gregory cut inside Johnson and fired a low shot across Belford from 12 yds. Farley forced a fine save from Stannage in the 27th minute but the visitors nearly grabbed a second on the stroke of half time when Belford did well to tip over a Carter header.

Half Time: 0-1

Coleshill continued to dominate after the break and after Johnson had cleared one shot off the line Coleshill grabbed a second, Wilson's 18yd free kick crossing the line after hitting the crossbar. Adders finally began to put a few passes together and the large crowd were treated to an exciting finale. Firstly Washburne scored his first goal for the club with a shot on the turn from the edge of the area. Then with five minutes left they grabbed the equalizer Weale's throw found Johnson and he advanced to the edge of the area before shooting high over Stannage and into the far corner of the Coleshill net.

Adders deserve more    Dec 18, 2011

Adders more than matched the League Leaders, but fell to two defensive errors

This was a tough task against the league leaders but the Adders started well. Washburne saw his well hit shot fly straight at 'keeper Neill and then Holmes shot just wide after Mewies had been fouled on the edge of the area after 9 minutes. Sphinx centre forward Edwards was causing problems for the Adders defence and his 28 minute header well parried by Belford was their best chance of the first half. Adders nearly grabbed the lead just before half time. A superb flowing passing move through the heart of the Sphinx defence set up Weale but his rising shot was well saved by Neill.

Half Time: 0-0

After a pretty comfortable first half Adders were pressed back much more in the second period. However, the best chance was an Adders 25yd free kick from Sockett which thumped the Sphinx upright. In the 53rd minute Sphinx pressure finally told. Several crosses whizzed across the 6yd box until Rhodes sidefooted the ball passed Belford. Adders replied well and a fierce inswinging corner from the skillful Washburne hit the crossbar in the 65th minute. Rhodes scored his second after 82 minutes from close range to seal the victory for Sphinx.

Very little between the two teams, in fact Adders probably had more possession but in the end it was Sphinx who had a player who was in the right place at the right time to tap in the ball into the net.

Officials Rob Adders    Dec 11, 2011

A totally incompetent Referee costs the Adders

Atherstone players, officials and fans were left stunned by what they witnessed at Sheepy Road today.

A superb cross-field pass by Boal found Johnson on the right wing but he shot just wide in the first minute. Heath Hayes top scorer Waple then tested Belford with a snap shot two minutes later. Heath Hayes almost took the lead on the 25th minute when a Waple drive was touched onto the post at full stretch by Belford. They took the lead after 30 minutes when Geldant cut in from the left wing and unleashed a fierce 20 yd drive passed Belford. Both sets of players were making this a fast paced entertaining spectacle despite the referee appartently never having heard of the advantage rule and blowing his whistle for every minor transgression. Holmes and Douglas both came close towards the end of the first half as Adders regained their composure.

Half Time: 0-1

The second half started badly for the Adders when Douglas was sent off in the 48th minute for foul and abusive language. Their best chance fell to Mewies in the 52nd minute when he failed to control a centre when unmarked 6yds out. At the other end Belford made a superb save tipping over a Waple header. Then in the 65th minute came probably the most bizzare sending off ever seen at Sheepy Road. Pollitt, who was on a yellow card, was walking off the pitch having been substiuted and as he reached the dug out took off his shirt. Referee Johnson called him back and showed him a second yellow. Mayhem followed for several minutes as the officials lost control of the bewildered players. Now with only nine players and with the crowd behind them the Adders surged forward and scored a deserved equaliser with 10 minutes left when Sockett planted a superb left foot volley into the roof of the Heath Hayes net from an acute angle. It could have been even better when Boal shot straight at Jenkins when through on goal with five minutes remaining.

A magnifienct comeback by the nine man Adders who had to overcome a more than competent opposition and less than competent refereeing to gain a well deserved draw.

Great Performance    Dec 4, 2011

Man for Man, the Adders played well, a great team performance

Adders took the lead in the 13th minute. Mewies was pushed in the back inside the area and Weale hammered home the subsequent penalty kick. Boal then forced Mountain in the home goal to tip over a fierce 25yd volley. Adders were well on top and Mewies and Johnson were just wide of the mark with close range volleys whilst at the other end Meakin's 20yd drive was Dinkirk's only effort of the first half.

Half Time: 0-1
A Weale 30yd thunderbolt just wide of the near post sent spectators diving for cover behind the goal two minutes after the restart. Then in the 55th minute came Adder's goal of the season so far. A Weale throw found Boal just inside the area. He controlled the ball on his chest, flicked it over his marker to Bailey who hit an equisite lob into the far corner of the goal from 18yds. A brilliant goal. It was all Adders now and Mewies should have done better with a close range header which he directed straight at Mountain after 61 minutes. Weale and Boal both had long range shots well saved before the underworked Belford in the Adders goal gifted the home team a goal with seven minutes left. Instead of clearing the ball out of the ground he tried to dribble around Day and failed miserably leaving the Dunkirk striker to side foot home from an acute angle. Weale though sealed maximum points for the Adders with an 87th minute penalty after James had been clattered into by Mountain on the penalty spot.

Good Display by Adders    Nov 27, 2011

Adders were in the main superior to their high flying visitors.

Adders were quick off the mark when after only 2 minutes Boal fed Pollitt and his drive stung Lawton's fingers in the student's goal. The first half settled into a pattern of neat midfield passing with neither side creating too much in the way of chances. Things livened up just before the break though. After 40 minutes a long ball found Nti with just Belford to beat but he sidefooted the ball well wide from close range. Soon after the officials seemed to miss a clear penalty when Weale was pushed in the back and then Boal burst through the away defence only to shoot straight at Lawton.

Half Time: 0-0

Playing down the hill and with the wind behind the second half belonged exclusively to the Adders. In the 48th minute some neat passing by the home side let in Sockett but his volley flew just over. Two minutes later an exiciting run down the left wing by substitute Healy nearly let to a goal but his shot hit the side netting. Weale's long throws were causing Loughborough problems and one in the 68th minute almost provided a chance for Tucker but Lawton was just quicker to the ball. It was all Adders by now and a Bailey volley just over after 75 minutes and a Boal header just wide a minute later were both good chances. However not for the first time this season their inability to finish off the opposition was to cost them dear. In the 82nd minute and with their first attack of the second half a stray pass in midfield let in Fallon and he beat Belford with a low 20 yd drive. Adders would not be denied though and with the last kick of the game grabbed a deserved equaliser. A Boal header from a right wing cross hit the inside of Lawton's post and rolled along the goal line. The same player was the quickest to react as he slid in to force the ball over the line.

Adders lose it late    Nov 20, 2011

Adders more than matched their opponents until late in the game

Adders began brightly with Pollitt twice causing problems in the home defence with dangerous crosses but the home side had the game's first real chance when Belford tipped Guryn's volley onto the crossbar. It was Bridgnorth who took the lead in the 20th minute when Griffith's firmly struck 25 yd shot beat Belford low to his right. Adders came back strongly and a Weale free kick just wide, an Ashby 30 yd volley straight at the keeper and a Pollitt drive blocked on its way to goal were their best chances.

Half Time: 1-0

Griffiths forced Belford to a flying save soon after the break as the home side started the second period brightly. However in the 55th minute Adders strung together a fine passing movement which ended with home keeper Crook saving well at Pollitt's feet. It was the same player in the 62nd minute who nearly grabbed an equaliser when his neat chip landed on the crossbar. That though was the end of the Adders as an attacking force as Bridgnorth finished the stronger. Welch scored both goals in the 85th and 87th minute. The first with a neat chip over Belford and the second with a close range header after the ball had rebounded off the crossbar as the Adders' efforts rather fizzled out.

Adders Emphatic Win    Nov 19, 2011

Adders were very good value for their win.

Ellesmere scored with their first attack. A cross from the right to the near post was sidefooted passed Allan in the home goal by Williams after just 5 minutes. Generally though the first half was dominated by the home side. A Lake shot was kicked off the Ellesmere line before Adders took the lead in the 15th minute. Away 'keeper Bebb only found Boal 40 yds out with his clearance and as he rushed back to his goal to stop Boal's shot he seemed to stumble and the ball nestled in the corner of the net. At last a bit of good fortune to the Adders. Boal and Weale were linking well up front and this led to Adders deservedly taking the lead after 34 minutes when Weale converted a penalty given by referee Dadley for handball - a little harsh perhaps. Things became even worse for the visitors just before the interval when Farr was dismissed for violent play. Totally out of the blue Ellesmere drew level on the stroke of half time when Williams beat Allan to head in a free kick.

Half Time: 2-2

Apart from a tremendous tip over by Allan from a Ford 25 yd free kick the second half belonged to the Adders. The Ellesmere goal led a charmed life as in a five minute spell around the 70th minute Pollitt twice and Lake all had shots cleared off the line. It seemed once again the young Adders were not going to get their just rewards until finally Lake's 20 yd shot flew off Bebb's right hand into the roof of the net to set off wild celebrations.

Much Improved Adders    Nov 6, 2011

Adders deserved at least a point.

The home side scored in the 7th minute. A corner to the back post was headed back across the area for McMahon to volley home. Adders 'keeper Allan made a fine save from Langston a few minutes later but generally Atherstone were the more positive team with Pollitt giving his maker a torrid time. A Boal shot after 17 minutes was deflected over the bar. In the 19th minute Purslow had his shot cleared off the line and two minutes later a Dineen free kick sailed just wide of the upright. Pollitt had the beating of the full back every time and a neat interchange with Boal lead to another shot going just wide in the 37th minute. It was Pollitt again a minute later supplying the cross for Dineen who shot wide and Lonsdale saw his 30yd drive well saved by Froggart in the home goal. So at half time it was Adders leadin 8-2 on chances but unfortunately still behind 1-0 on goals.

Half Time: 1-0

Pollitt again started positively and his 30yd angled drive was well handled by Froggart. The match turned on two incidents in the 60th and 61st minutes. Firstly Tucker seemed to be knocked over in the area but the referee refused to award a penalty. Then a most unfortunate mistake by the otherwise immaculate Allan in the Adders goal. There seemed no danger as he went to throw the ball out to the wing but it slipped from his grasp and dropped to the feet of the grateful Sterling who rounded Allan and tapped the ball into an empty net. McMahon added a third with a fine volley in the 83rd minute and substitute Gayle finally managed to grab a deserved consolation goal with three minutes remaining when he side footed home a Pollitt cross.

Lots of positives to be gained from this unlucky defeat and a similar level of form will surely see Adders climbing the table

Poor Referee Costs Adders    Oct 30, 2011

Things began badly for the Adders before a ball was even kicked when keeper Courtney Belford sustained a shoulder injury in the warm-up and ex Tamworth custodian and coach Neil Barnes had to substitute between the sticks. Adders weakness to the long through ball was again in evidence after 14 minutes when Law slotted the ball under Barnes for a far too simple goal. Adders replied positively though and passed the ball around well in midfield with Tucker having an outstanding game. After 40 minutes Pollitt was brought down in the penalty area as he attempted to cross from the bye-line. Weale hit his shot firmly but Mountain in the Dunkirk goal made a fine save high to his right.

Half Time: 0-1

The second half began in even worse circumstances for the home team when Douglas was sent off for a reckless tackle. It seemed very harsh as the referee ignored two Dunkirk fouls which if anything were even worse. After 61 minutes Webb was dispossessed in his own area and Meakin beat Barnes with a shot inside his near post to make it 0-2. Barnes then made a fine save from Garmston hurling himself high to his right to fingertip the ball around his righthand post. Law then added his second and Dunkirk's third with five minutes remaining.

Not a happy day for Atherstone though there were positives such as Craig Tucker's excellent show in midfield but again little threat from the forwards and all three goals were preventable.

Adders match their opponents    Oct 29, 2011

Adders more than matched their higher league opposition until final 15 mins

Adders welcomed back Courtney Belford in goal and he was soon in action parrying a 20yd shot by Edwards after 5 minutes. Soon after Pollitt and Weale combined well but Weale misshit his shot. Two further long range shots from Weale and Isherwood were Adders best efforts whereas Belford made a fine save in the 34th minute tipping the ball over the bar from Bragoli. In torrential rain Webb nearly caught out Belford with a header that just eluded the keeper but thankfully bobbled just wide of the post.

Half Time: 0-0

Blythe was guilty of an horrendous miss just into the second half when following a cross by Bragoli he somehow managed to side foot the ball against the post with the goal empty in front of him. Rushell 'keeper Gemmell then made a brilliant save from a 20 yd deflected Weale shot stretching accrobatically to tip the ball over the bar. Up to this point Adders had been more than a match for their higher league opponents but they conceeded three goals in the last 25 minutes. Substitute Bannister headed the first after 65 minutes, Francis scrambled the ball over the line in the 77th minute and Keenan fired home a firm drive with 10 minutes remaining.

A good effort from the Adders after the disappointment of Saturday and perhaps now with no cup competitions to act as distractions all the effort can be put into moving up the league.

Adders lose in injury time    Oct 23, 2011

Adders lost in 8 minutes added on by referee due to time wasting by Stafford

A large contingent of Adder's fans made the trip to the impressive new home of Stafford Town close to the town centre. Adders started brightly and a Lake cross nearly deceived Burn in the home goal in the 6th minute. Chamberlain was twice called into action after 12 minutes making fine saves from Hulme and Agar. A poor Lake header caused panic in the away defence two minutes later but Douglas cleared the ball as it ran across the 6yd box. Rolph should have done better in the 37th minute when with just Burn to beat he shot weakly at the advancing 'keeper. The home side took the lead two minutes before the interval. The ball fell to Hulme just inside the box who hit a firm volley low passed Chamberlain's right hand.

Half Time: 1-0

Smith had the ball in the net after 55 minutes for Stafford only to find the assistants flag raised. Adders best chance was an Obi header turned over the bar by Burn after 68 minutes. Another Stafford 'goal' was disallowed for offside soon after as Adders clung on. Then came the heartbreaking finale for all Adders fans. In the 83rd minute a Weale header was chipped over the advancing keeper by Tucker to make it 1-1. In the next minute Obi made a strong run down the right, crossed to the far post and there was Weale to volley the ball into the roof of the net, 1-2. Meanwhile the excellent Chamberlain in the Adders goal had departed with a groin strain to be replaced by Frankham. Adders seemed to be holding on well to their advantage until the 2nd minute of injury time when after a scramble inside the Adders area the ball fell to Agar who made no mistake with a crisp low shot. Things got even worse when after 8 minutes of injury time the substitute keeper let an innocuous cross slip under his diving body and Hurley scored joyously from close range to send Atherstone out of this years competition.

An awful ending but in truth at no stage did Atherstone dominate their lower league opponents who always looked the more likely to score.

Adders win well    Oct 16, 2011

Adders fully deserved the three points in a fine display

Adders defence was soon under pressure and the inability to clear the ball nearly cost them a goal on two occasions when Swann shot wide and Chamberlain made a fine save after another poor clearance. Tipton took the lead in the 22nd minute when a cross cum shot flew across the 6yd box and Swann scored easily at the far post. A Douglas header well saved by Evans was Adders first attempt on goal but they equalised on the stroke of half time. Weale played a neat one two with the impressive Obi just outside the Tipton penalty area and then struck his shot low to the 'keepers right; a fine goal.

Half Time: 1-1

Pollitt was included in the early action in the second half when his cross from the right was vollied towards the goal by Dineen forcing Evans to tip the ball over. Then in the 52nd minute his shot was handled on the line by Griffiths and after a long delay Weale hammered home the penalty. It was Pollitt again in the 67th minute who nearly grabbed another his 30 yd drive sailing just wide. Generally though injuries and substitutions were causing play to be disjointed and the crowd had to wait until the 85th minute for the next real action when Swann saw his 30 yd shot thump the Adders cross bar. More hesitating in the 88th minute nearly cost them dear but Chamberlain saved well at Black's feet and Adders hung on for a deserved success.

Adders see Red    Oct 9, 2011

A myopic referee ruined an excellent performance by the Adders

The first attempt on goal was a long range free kick by Simkiss for the hosts, well saved by Frankham and it was the home team who went ahead after 11 minutes. A long ball over the Adders defence was lobbed over Frankham by Russell. Clark should have scored after 28 minutes, missing a close range header as Adders struggled to mount an attack. Their first chance came after 31 minutes when a Weale header was handled near the goal line by a Tividale defender but the presumably unsighted officials missed the incident.

Half Time: 1-0

The second half began with several juicy challenges from both teams as Adders finally started to have some midfield possesion but chances were non existant until a Farley header was well saved by home 'keeper Beech. Adders chances were dealt a terminal blow after 72 minutes when Lake was shown a second yellow card after a rather needless challenge near the corner flag. Frankham made two fine saves in a minute before a Wattley header thumped his cross bar. Finally Russell made things safe for Tividale slotting the ball home after another fine Frankham save in the 84th minute. In the 90th minute Purslow was harshly sent off for bringing down Russell when both players seemed to stumble in the area and the Tividale striker completed his hat-trick from the spot.

Despite the score-line this was a much improved Adders showing especially after the interval when they looked favourites for an equaliser. This ended when they were reduced to ten men. Good performances by new signing Isherwood and Tucker when he came on but still not enough chances being created.

Adders battle well    Oct 8, 2011

Adders dominated play, but fell to injuries

Coleshill took the lead as early as the 5th minute when Ramsey vollied in a corner from 10yds. Adders evened up the scoring when Weale brushed aside two Coleshill defenders before slotting the ball passed Hathaway after 30 minutes. 1-1 at half time was about right but the home side took the lead one minute into the second half when Lloyd unleased a superb 25 yd left foot volley which gave Frankham no chance. Coleshill nearly sealed the game in the 70th minute when Fitzharris thumped the Adders crossbar. Finally with ten minutes to go a long range shot was deflected into William's path and he made it 3-1.

Defeat in Ten Man Syndrome    Oct 2, 2011

After two consecutive victories Adders started brightly with a Pollitt cross put wide by Gayle and a Douglas header tipped over by Taylor. The visitors however were reduced to long range efforts which failed to trouble new keeper Frankham. Alvechurch seemed to have taken the lead after 22 minutes, but Palmer's deflected header was adjusted offside. Dempster and Elder both had good chances in the 39th and 40th minute before Adders took the lead after 42 minutes. There seemed just the slightest contact between Smith and Fallon as a cross was safely caught by Taylor but referee Gee thought it merited a foul much to the ire of visiting players and supporters. Weale easily converted from the spot.

Half Time: 1-0

Three minutes into the second half Alvechurch grabbed the equaliser. A corner was not cleared and Curtis vollied in from 6 yds. Soon afterwards came another controversial incident. Gall seemed to fall on the ball in the centre of the pitch. However the referee thought it warranted a second yellow card and the visitors were down to 10 men. As often happens this seemed to inspire the visitors and the rest of the game was dominated by them with the Adders barely able to mount an attack, the neat passing of the opening period being a distant memory Elder should have scored with a close range header and Dempster nearly caught out Frankham with a 40 yd lob which he just recovered to tip over the crossbar. Eventually in the 87th minute Alvechurch grabbed the winner. Neat work by Nash set up Elder who shot home from 12 yds. Adders nearly equalised on the stroke of full time when Dineen's header thumped the crossbar.

Adders comfortable win    Sep 25, 2011

In an unusual setting, the Adders progressed to the next round

Wolverhampton nearly opened the scoring in the 6th minute when Allen dived spectacularly to his left to keep out a 20 yd free kick. However it was Adders who opened the scoring after 24 minutes. A scramble in the home penalty area led to a high bouncing ball and Douglas rose above the defence to head in from 6 yds. The half then settled into one of Wolverhampton possesion but with Adders always looking threatening on the break. After 41 minutes Pollitt did well to seize onto a poor throw out from Bateman in the home goal but his cross was put wide by Weale.

Half Time: 0-1

Gayle came close just after the break but he screwed his shot wide with just the keeper to beat. Otherwise the pattern of the opening half continued with Wolverhampton having most of the possesion but the Adders defence standing firm and little goalmouth activity at either end. Finally Adders made the tie safe after 78 minutes. Fallon was put through on goal and he drew the 'keeper before crossing and giving Farley the simplest of chances. Weale saw his diving header palmed away by Bateman just before the end.

Hardly a classic but Adders reward is an away tie at Stafford on October 22nd.

Adders destroy Leaders    Sep 18, 2011

Adders outplay leaders in great display. It could have been six!!!

From the start Adders attitude was much improved on last Saturday's effort with Westfield's players being given no time on the ball and it was no surprise when they took the lead in the 6th minute, Rolph slotting the ball under the advancing 'keeper from 10 yds. However the crowd's joy was stifled immediately afterwards when Jones curled in an angled drive from 12 yds to even up the scoring. The first half was an entertaining affair but with few clear cut chances. Weale did best for the Adders with a 30 yd shot straight at Moore and Gorle saw his long range drive sail just over before the interval.

Half Time: 1-1

Westfield's early pressure should have led to a goal after 55 minutes but Addis fired well over with just Allen to beat. The rest of the half belonged to the Adders as they finally gave their long suffering supporters something to cheer. After 60 minutes Weale was adjudged to have been brought down in the area and the same player easily converted the penalty with a shot high to Moore's right. Five minutes later Weale saw a 30 yd thunderbolt rattle the cross bar as Adders dominated the league leaders. Dineen then had a 20 yd free kick thump the post. Finally the points were made safe by substitute Gayle. A defensive pass went astray and the forward advanced towards the Westfield goal before coolly chipping the ball over the advancing keeper to make it a deserved 3-1 victory.

Depleted Adders Lose    Sep 11, 2011

An Adders team with several players missing lost in a drab affair

Hadley tried to repeat his spectacular goal at Stratford but was just wide with his long range lob whilst Williams for the visitors shot straight at Allan after 24 minutes. Two minutes later the same player set up Sphinx's first goal. His deflected shot could have gone anywhere but it fell at Muldoon's feet who made no mistake from 10 yds. Rolph did well to clear off the goal line after 32 minutes and Muldoon headed over from close range four minutes later as Sphinx pressed home their advantage. Adders only effort was a Rolph shot that skimmed O'Neill's crossbar just before the interval.

Half Time: 0-1

The first half had been a tepid affair compared to previous meetings between these two sides and the bobbly pitch and strong wind were causing all players problems. Sphinx made it 0-2 in the 57th minute when Jackson fired home after a prolonged goalmouth scramble. Now playing against the wind Adders were showing nothing up front as the game meandered on. Saunders had the ball in the net after 75 minutes but the assistant flagged for offside and Williams saw his 20 yd volley sail just over after 80 minutes. Finally Adders had a shot on target after 85 minutes when Fallon hit a 30 yd drive straight at O'Neill. One minute from the end Edwards had a simple tap in for Sphinx's third following a free kick.

Kidsgrove go through    Sep 5, 2011

Kidsgrove were the stronger all over the park

The home side made the early running and Adder's 'keeper Allen had to make a fine block to keep out an Unwin header in the 9th minute. Adders replied straight after when Farley should have done better when left with just Hodgson to beat. However the usual failings of being unable to deal with set plays were to cost them dear, when Walker headed in a corner unchallenged in the 20th minute. Adders were really unlucky after Pollit unleashed a tremendous 25 yd drive that Hodgson did well to tip onto the bar. That aside Kidsgrove were now gaining supremecy and Adders had Allen to thank for two fine saves in the 33rd and 35th minutes from Johnson and Kinsey. It was 2-0 in the 37th minute when Ward headed in from a corner in identical fashion to the previous goal.

Half Time: 2-0

Beeston headed in Kidsgrove's third after 55 minutes again from a corner and the same player was denied by Allen again after 78 minutes. Adders were having their fair share of play but there was no threat up front and the defence was starting to look shakey. Kinsey added a fourth from a penalty in the 82nd minute and a fifth after 86 minutes following hesitation in the Adders defence. Substitute Fallon headed in a consolation goal on the stroke of full time.

In truth a Kidsgrove victory looked likely from early on and although Adders played some neat football in midfield they never looked to have the firepower up front or the resilience at the back to cope with a team from a higher league. Tom Allen is developing into a fine 'keeper and it looks as though his skills will be much in demand for the remainder of the season.

Dunkley wins the day    Aug 31, 2011

A game in which Adders had 80% of the play and most of the goal scoring opportunities, saw Adders worst opponents have four direct chances and score four goals, mainly provided by the Adders.

Adders applied the early pressure but it was Heather who had the first chance, Allen saving well low to his right from a Jarvis shot. Heather took the lead after 18 minutes when former Adders legend Roy Dunkley, slotted the ball home following a goalmouth scramble. The home side continued to dominate posession and were having success down the right but time after time there was no one to apply the finishing touch. In the 35th minute Purslow failed to control a pass inside his own area and Yonwin scored easily. Things got even worse for the defender a minute before half time giving away a penalty which Dunkley converted.

Half Time: 0-3

Purslow made amends to some degree by clearing a Yonwin shot off the line after 46 minutes but then pulled Carline in the area shortly after and Dunkley made it 0-4 from the spot to complete his hat trick. To their credit Adders kept going well and Farley saw his 25 yd shot tipped over by Brassington in the 50th minute and the impressive Rolph saw his goal bound volley deflected wide. Finally they got a goal back in the 66th minute, Weale converting a Pollit cross and after more pressure Purslow scrambled the ball over the line in the 85th minute. Pollit should have scored a third just before the end but he dragged his volley wide with just the keeper to beat.

1st Half let down    Aug 29, 2011

Adders came out to play in the second half, but their first half let them down

Swain and Gregory for the home side both wasted good headed opportunities in the opening ten minutes. Allen was then Adders saviour as he made a fine point-blank stop from Evans after 17 minutes. Farley should have scored for the Adders straight afterwards but with just Flynn to beat he shot straight at the advancing keeper. With Adders struggling to put any coherent passing moves together it was no surprise when Willenhall grabbed the lead in the 24th minute. A corner was headed on by Clews and Gregory headed in easily at the far post. It was 2-0 after 31 minutes. Purslow bringing down Gregory in the area and the same player converting the penalty.

Half Time: 2-0

Adders looked much brighter after the break and got a goal back in the 56th minute when Selvester was fouled in the area and Weale hit the penalty high to Flynn's right. At last Adders were showing some of the slick passing they showed at Stratford and Willenhall were now clinging on to their lead. All that changed though after 75 minutes when Gregory completed his hat-trick with a neat side-footed finish passed Allen with their first attack of the half. Roberts and Rolph went close in the last ten minutes but Willenhall held out for a deserved success.

Very disappointing. It seemed the club had turned the corner on Tuesday night but apart from the opening twenty minutes of the second half this was probably the poorest performance of the season and a huge improvement will be needed to trouble Kidsgrove next Saturday in the FA Cup.

Adders dominate at Stratford    Aug 25, 2011

The Adders started as they meant to continue and controlled early play.

This looked like Adders toughest fixture to date but they made a dream start when Hadley brilliantly chipped Cross in the home goal from fully 30 yds out to put them one up after only 4 minutes. Banks and Weale could have increased the lead before in the 28th minute Dale Farley set free by a superb Banks through ball slotted his shot under the advancing 'keeper. Adders were now well on top and a Thompson header just wide was Stratford's only chance. Weale nearly made it three on the stroke of half time when an angled shot was well tipped over by Cross.

Half Time: 0-2

New keeper Chamberlain who is on Liverpool's books, had his first save to make in the 48th minute sprinting from his goal when a back pass fell short but otherwise it was a case of stern Adders defending and trying to catch Stratford on the break. When Stratford did break through their finishing was awful with Beckley heading over from close range and Blake and Murphy blasting over from close range. Blake finally headed in after 85 minutes to make it 1-2 but Adders saw through the final few minutes safely and threatened to score on the breakaway on several occasions.

A well deserved victory against one of the leading sides in the league. Brilliant performances from all players and the winning margin could have been greater.

Adders Progress in FA Cup    Aug 21, 2011

Adders were made to fight hard and left it late to register their first win of the season

With neither side having scored a goal in competitive matches this season a high scoring encounter seemed unlikely as Adders missed two glorious chances to take the lead. After 6 minutes a superb Dineen through ball set Farley free but with Hayes advancing, his shot slid passed the right hand post. Then Weale, sliding in at the back post, saw his shot from an Adey cross sail over the bar. Both sides were enjoying periods of possession but it was the home side who looked most likely to score. Douglas had a header cleared off the line in the 23rd minute and just before the break a well worked free kick saw Hayes save well from Weale.

Half Time: 0-0

Adders were agonisingly close just after the break. Farley set off on a strong run down the right but his cross deceived both Weale and Moran. The second half was continuing in the same vein as the first with Adders on top but unable to create enough chances. Cadbury had two golden chances to take the lead though. Firstly a Parker 20 yd shot was brilliantly turned round the post by Allen, then in the 72nd minute the 'keeper dropped a high cross and Ellet thought he had scored as his shot rolled towards the goal line but Purslow slid in to make a fantastic goal line clearance. With a replay looking certain finally after 90 minutes came the moment all Adders fans had been praying for.

ROBBIE BANKS WON THE BALL ON THE HALF-WAY LINE, AND SET OFF TOWARDS THE CADBURY GOAL SHRUGGING OFF THREE CHALLENGES BEFORE SLOTTING THE BALL PASSED HAYES.

Cue wild celebrations, a place in the next round and one step closer to Wembley.

Adders Deserve Point    Aug 17, 2011

A much more solid Adders performance was again hampered by atrocious one sided refereeing.

It was again poor finishing that prevented the Adders taking an early lead. Banks made a fine run through the heart of the Boldmere defence after only 90 seconds, but Keen put his shot just wide of Gibson's right hand post. It was a much improved showing though after the Heath Hayes performance and Farley shot just wide after 15 minutes after a mazy Weale run. Overfield was causing the home defence problems and he was denied after 20 minutes when his 30 yd volley was tipped over the bar by Allen. Douglas could have grabbed the lead after 38 minutes but his header from a Banks free kick was just over the bar.

Half Time: 0-0

Purslow missed a great chance just after the interval putting his header from 6 yds well wide when it seemed easier to score. At the other end a melee in the home 6 yd box saw Rolph boot the ball off the line. A Weale 20 yd drive just wide in the 56th minute, and a Banks 20 yd free kick after 75 minutes were Adders best chances whereas both of Boldmere's chances came from Smith who clipped the cross bar with an intended cross in the 65th minute and then saw his header from a corner drift just wide of the post two minutes from the end. Adders last chance fell to Dineen who vollied over from Gibson's punch out just before the final whistle.

Much better performance at the back and in midfield but four games without a goal. Let's hope for some better fortune in front of goal in Saturday's vital FA Cup tie

Adders defensive errors    Aug 16, 2011

On a day when the Adders gave away more goals, the referee was atrocious and poor Connor Rendchen suffered a terrible injury

With no goals in the first two matches, former players Luke Keen and Chris Sturridge-Packer were included up front but it was the home side who took an early lead after only five minutes when Haseley beat Johnson far too easily inside the area and then hit his shot under Stannage in the Adders goal. It then took a fine save from the 'keeper to prevent the same player from scoring an own goal ten minutes later when he miss-hit his clearance. As last season, high balls over the Adders defence were a constant problem and it was no surprise when a quick clearance caught the defence too far upfield and Haseley from inside his own half advanced on Stannage. The 'keeper made the initial save but Allen following up scrambled the ball over the line to make it 2-0 after 30 minutes.

Half Time: 2-0

Adders started brightly after the break passing the ball around neatly in midfield and a Banks free kick hit straight at Jenkins in the home goal and a Douglas header just over the bar were their first real chances. Any thoughts of an Adders revival were snuffed out after 55 minutes when Waple cut in from the wing and slotted the ball coolly into the corner of the net with far too much much ease. Rendchen forced Jenkins to make a fine save high to his left after 70 minutes but the home side made it 4-0 in the 77th minute. Stannage seemed to dive and collect the ball fairly at Waple's feet but referee Mr Hill thought otherwise and with what was one of a number of bewildering decisions gave Heath Hayes a penalty, converted by Deakin. Rolph and Banks had chances towards the end, but a miserable afternoon ended when Rendchen was taken to hospital in an ambulance after a heavy challenge inside his own area just before the finish.

Full Time: 4-0

Adders Deserve Draw    Aug 11, 2011

The Adders were positive and inventive, but where Loughborogh took their chances, the Adders did not.

Adders started brightly and Farley and Gorle both had early shots at goal from 20 yds. The best chance though came in the 20th minute when Farley was through on goal but dragged his shot well wide with just Hazlett to beat. Loughborough had to wait until the 35th minute for their first effort on goal when a 30 yd Roberts shot was confidently handled by Stannage. An even first half had a sting in its tail for the Adders. Firstly neat footwork from Nti wrong footed the Adders defence and he finished neatly from an angle after 42 minutes and then on the stroke of half time Nti chipped Stannage to make it 2-0.

Half Time: 2-0

Chances were few in the second half. Farley saw his 15 yd volley well tipped over by Hazlett whilst at the other end Stannage made a superb double save in the 55th minute and then Delderfield struck the post after 68 minutes. The match rather petered out with the Adders attack unable to make any impression on a well drilled home defence.

Full Time: 2-0

Atherstone Team: Stannage, Johnson, Rolph, Douglas, Webb, Weale (Rendchen), Purslow (Dainty), Gorle (Babington), Dineen, Banks (capt), Farley

Defensive errors prove costly    Aug 7, 2011

Adders were more than the equals of their opponents, but defensive errors proved to be the decider.

Farley nearly opened the scoring for the Adders in the 10th minute but with just Turner to beat his low shot grazed the post and went wide. Causeway's first attempt was a Stevenson 25 yd shot which Stannage did well to punch away. Stannage did well again in the 23rd minute tipping over a 30 yd How free kick. The visitors took the lead after 27 minutes. Martin crossed from the goal line and Wells had a simple header at the far post. It was nearly worse for the Adders seven minutes later. A 30 yd Wells shot was straight at Stannage but it squirmed through his fingers an was only stopped from going over the line by some acrobatic 'keeping. Adders were fortunate to still be in the game at this stage especially after How shot against the post and Greg missed an open goal on the follow up just before half-time.

Half Time: 0-1

Weale had the chance to level things up for the Adders after 52 minutes but his close range volley was well saved low to his left by Turner. How almost scored for the visitors after 65 minutes but his 12 yd shot hit the post and then immediately at the other end a powerful run and shot from Farley saw his 25 yd effort do the same. It was a little harsh on the home side, when Causeway increased their lead after 73 minutes. How burst through two defenders before slotting the ball low under Stannage. With five minutes left substitute Mullings played a careless back pass behind the Adders defence. It was intercepted by How who crossed to the unmarked Greg for a simple third.

A disappointing start then. Causeway are one of the leagues better sides and certainly their close passing style was superior to the Adders. Also no side can afford the defensive lapses which gifted two of the goals. There were postives though with a fine performance up front by Dale Farley and the opening of the new bar which will hopefully be the start of more prosperous times at Sheepy Road.

Full Time: 0-3
